A couple of weeks back, DeNA and Square Enix finally made the announcement that an English release of Final Fantasy: Record Keeper was on the way. The free-to-play social RPG that covers the entire main Final Fantasy series has been a pretty big hit in Japan since its release about six months ago, and with a vague Spring release date planned, English players will get their hands on it soon. Leading up to its release, a pre-registration campaign is being run at the game’s official site. Special bonuses are unlocked based on how many people register, and the latest is the 8-Bit Creator contest.
Let’s be honest, one of the main pulls of this game, like the not-so-hot Final Fantasy: All The Bravest (Free) before it, is the chance to see the characters and settings from the 3D Final Fantasy games rendered in the classic sprite style from the 16-bit games. Seeing Cloud, Balthier, and Lightning standing alongside Cecil, Bartz, and Locke in a similar art style hits all kinds of weird nostalgia buttons. We can dream higher, though, thanks to the 8-Bit Creator. Forget Lightning for a second. Well, okay, I know you can’t, Motomu Toriyama, but the rest of you probably can. Imagine instead of her standing beside Cecil, it’s you. Yes, the winners of this contest will get their likeness recreated in a classic 16-bit Final Fantasy sprite, done by the Square Enix artists themselves.
The details are at the official site for the contest, but basically, you need to have a Facebook account to enter. Yes, the companies will get some of your information, so if you’re hiding from The Law, you might want to reconsider it. Otherwise, head on over to the site and follow the instructions for your chance to be rendered in a glorious 16 x 24 pixel image. We’ll have more info on Final Fantasy: Record Keeper pretty soon, so keep your eyes peeled.
