New ‘Cut the Rope 2’ Video Released, ‘Cut the Rope: Holiday Gift’ Returns to the App Store for Free

TouchArcade Rating:

Last week we learned that Cut the Rope 2 would be heading to iOS on December 19th, and would feature new mechanics as well as a group of helper characters to accompany OmNom on his latest adventure. Today, IGN has learned some new details about Cut the Rope 2 as well as secured the first video of the intro of the game, which introduces these helper characters who are known as Nommies. Also, they’ve learned that Cut the Rope 2 will be priced at 99¢, and that the iOS exclusivity will be fairly short-lived as the game is set to come to Android in early 2014 as a free-to-play title.

In related Cut the Rope news, ZeptoLab’s seasonal holiday-themed spinoff Cut the Rope: Holiday Gift (Free) has returned to the App Store as a free download in time for the holidays. Holiday Gift originally launched back in December of 2010, and features a short selection of levels with Christmas trees and special stockings which you can drop a candy in and see it pop out of another stocking somewhere else in the level, teleporter-style. There’s also a greeting card feature that lets you snap a photo with OmNom and send it out to friends and family.

If you haven’t played it in previous years, Cut the Rope: Holiday Gift is a nice freebie that’s totally worth checking out. And set your clocks for December 19th when Cut the Rope 2 arrives in the iOS App Store for 99¢.

This is gonna be so amazing. Love this game. Can't wait!

    2. Guest

So much good news this month :)

    3. zergslayer69

Oh god shadows! That's all I needed them to add! *runs off and plays tag with shadow*

    4. Kugiro

      Sweet!

    5. Louis Ace

UNIVERSAL SUPPORT OMG YES! This game was the reason I wanted an iPad. Now I don't have to get one! YES!

      1. renatpl

You should get an ipad anyway though 👌

        1. Louis Ace

I have a Nexus 7, and an iPhone. There are many great HD games, but none of them really are worth a $400-$500 investment.

          1. ImJPaul

Very true. I learned this the hard way. Damn IB: Dungeons. Haha. Still a sound investment though.

          2. Wizard of Odyssey

And many of the good iOS games are exactly the same on the much cheaper Nexus 7. If I were to break/drop/lose that device, it wouldn't hurt nearly as much as if I had to replace a nice iPad.

    6. troll_hunter

The updates I was hoping for, yess!

    7. BulkSlash

I hope they add iCloud saving, being able to switch between playing on the iPad at home and on the iPhone while out will be really useful.

      1. Wizard of Odyssey

Cloud saving is a MUST for a long game like this. Fortunately, it has become pretty standard. If this launches with controller support but no cloud saving, I'll kiss a Wookiee.

    8. Fangbone

Retina support please for the love of god

      1. Jared Nelson

The IGN article actually does mention retina support, I've updated this story to include that info. Thanks.

        1. Fangbone

          Good lookin out

    9. miumius

      I approve of this.

    10. Amenbrother

All the news lately is oldie but goodies but I want some games that really push my iPad air!

      1. Themostunclean

Won't happen for a while. Developers are more concerned with supporting the millions of older devices rather than just the newest. I'd say once the Air is one or two generations older you'll start seeing games that really push its capabilities. We're just now seeing games that push the iPad 2 and 4S to their limits.

    11. Skullinton

Soon is never soon enough! :p

    12. iammane

This is wild news! I bought for iPad and never really played. Will be nice to pick it up again. But shrinking that UI.... Daaayum hoping for the best lol

      1. Nekkedsnake

XCOM iOS has pretty tight UI as well. A bit on the tiny side but then again it works.

        1. iammane

I loooooove xcom to death, and exclusively play on the phone. I think I've gotten my twenty bucks worth at least twice over!!

          1. Nekkedsnake

xcom is great! its on my 4s, macbook, and ps3. i need enemy within!

            1. iammane

A friggin men! I don't think we're gonna see it on ios though, and my next purchase is ps4 so here's to hoping for Gaikai support or a native version lol

    13. Jake7905

Cannot wait for this!! I've got my trusty iPhone 5, but no IPad, so I've been praying for a universal update to KOTOR since it's release. Finally, the king of Star Wars' games available to all! I guess a pre-Christmas update is unrealistic though.

      1. Wizard of Odyssey

Aspyr is pretty good at keeping secrets. I'll bet it's ready for release right now. Perhaps they will wait a week or two so they don't hurt yesterday's launch of Lego Star Wars Complete Saga.

Look back at the original "surprise" release of KOTOR on iOS: the App Store says version 1.0 came out on May 16th (even though it hadn't been launched yet). The first Touch Arcade story about the "leak" in a newsletter way on Tuesday May 21. It was confirmed on the morning of Thursday May 30th. Then it showed up in the store two hours later.

    14. Themostunclean

I would have bet money this never would have happened. The UI must have gotten a major overhaul. There's no way it's playable by just shrinking the iPad version.

      1. ScotDamn

Although I'm stoked for the universal support, I share your concern with the UI.

I wish more iPad games would do this if it were viable. Too many iPad only games out there.

      2. Wizard of Odyssey

I felt that the iPad version was optimized in the movement/action scenes, but the menus resembled a shunken-down PC screen. There was literally room for improvement -- they left big non-Retina borders around everything. It would be nice if the menus were a bit more spread out even in the iPad version. I'm thrilled that they took the time to make it right and I'm really looking forward to playing this on my 5S.

    15. armilla

YES PLEASE! I love Mass Effect but never had a chance to play KOTOR - instabuy!

      1. iarepan

Me neither. I'm really excited for this knowing almost nothing about it.

    16. brydude111

Yes! This game on the iPod is exactly what I was waiting for!

    17. Billy Ocean

      oh hell yeah

    18. iRichie

This is good news I can't wait :-)

    19. Techead81

Well at least one developer is listening...

    20. Anpro

      Jared,

You mentioned that you would like to play it more on your phone...any particular reason? I would assume that ipad would be a better way to play this game.

      Thanks!

      1. 61050

im not jared, but my guess would be because he likely has his phone with him more than his ipad? my jeans with the ipad sized pockets are dry clean only, and when i do bother to get them cleaned, i usually put my laptop in that pocket anyway as it is equally as cumbersome but is a 27x more capable machine.

        1. Wizard of Odyssey

Pics of those wacky jeans, please?

    21. Defcubusal

Great news, I was just talking about this. Next up... Baldurs Gate.

      1. iarepan

Wasn't that game riddled with issues on the iPad? I only have an iPad 1 (now relegated to toddler use), so I haven't been paying attention to non-iPhone releases.

    22. AngryBaby

      Keith,

I'm very excited for this update... Especially since I downloaded for iPad during last month's sale and it's next up on my list. Will wait for the update and enjoy the heck out of it.

      Thanks!

    23. Colten Moore

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY

    24. ImJPaul

Hopefully this transitions as seamlessly as something like Bastion did. This is INCREDIBLE news!!!

      1. Womble

        Ditto, I'm super stoked!

    25. Nekkedsnake

cannot wait for this! I've been HOPING that KOTOR become universal and BAM! now for a release date pls!

    26. Teremei

Awesome. There are only a few games I wish I had an iPad for. This is one of them.

    27. Sharkenbear

Retina? Might have to finally check this out...

    28. senkoujin

Please add support for iOS 5.x

      1. Wizard of Odyssey

Dude. iOS 5 came out two years, two months, and one day ago. If iOS 5 were a human, it would be running and building towers. It's not a human, it's a mobile OS, which means it is time for you to upgrade.

Any device that can't run at least iOS6 is not going to be able to run KOTOR.

        1. TripMX

That's understandable, but you undermine the minor gap between these two firmwares. Firmware-wise, 5.1.1 and 6.0 are not leagues behind each other. If anything, if the developer can do this, the sales potential would have no choice but to increase.

          1. Wizard of Odyssey

            How do you figure?

I can think of only two reasons to stay on that relatively ancient firmware: old hardware (such as iPad 1 or older iPod Touch), in which case you're constrained by slow CPU and only 256MB of RAM, or jail broken, in which case you probably aren't buying much software anyway.

Can you think of any other reasons for developers to support ios5?

            1. free2play4eva

Not everyone can afford the latest and greatest....

              1. Wizard of Odyssey

Better save your pennies then. It's under your control. Apple and the software developers aren't.

                1. free2play4eva

If they want more sales they must optimise for the majority if iOS releases they make more money that way ;)

                  1. Wizard of Odyssey

Disagree. Early adopters have more money and are therefore better customers for buying software. They don't wait for 99c apps to go on sale for free or bitch about $10 app pricing on Touch Arcade.

If what you said about large numbers of users were true, Android gaming would be bigger than iOS. It isn't.

            2. TripMX

I consider 3.x ancient firmware; 5.x isn't ancient firmware, especially considering what it can run AND the fact that most apps in the current AppStore still support 5.x. I have an iPad 2 running 5.1.1 (512MB RAM); device runs all AAA apps (like DH4, Asphalt 8, XCOM, etc.) with little to no trouble at all. At most, XCOM (3.2 GB app) leaves me with ~50MB RAM to spare. It's not my device, it's the firmware...this is why I'm asking for 5.x support. If other AAA titles can do it, why can't this OLD game do it? Like I said, it's a dev choice, but I merely inquire about a possibility; if they decide to support it, they will receive my money + another happy customer.

              1. Wizard of Odyssey

Okay, it's not your device, it's you. Why won't you upgrade your firmware?

                1. TripMX

The reason is that it's too late for me. I liked iOS 5.1.1 so much (as it's actually the optimal firmware for my A5 chip device) that I did not bother updating. iOS 7.x.x is the latest firmware Apple has imposed upon us, and that update will break whatever stability and performance my device had in 5.1.1. I'd rather buy a later iDevice than update my current one, but like I said, I'm just inquiring with the developer on this to amend whatever gap that 5.x has with 6.x so that I may be able to save my money (for now at least) and continue using what I've already paid for in 2011, as it's still clearly good hardware (hell, even Apple's still promoting it).

                  1. Wizard of Odyssey

                    "Optimal firmware for your device?"

                    You're delusional.

                    1. TripMX

It is in my opinion that 5.1.1 is the optimal firmware for my iPad 2 (A5 chip). I'm no specs wizard, but from my hardcore experiences on my device, iOS 5.1.1 always delivered AND and the same time kept my battery life intact. I bought my device in 2011 and the battery STILL lasts a full 9~10 hours, mind you I AM a heavy gamer. If you believe iOS 7 is the optimal firmware for my device, then I'd say you're delusional. *looks at my friend's iPad mini running the same app I'm running sluggishly on iOS 7.0.4*

            3. REkzkaRZ

              More users.
(Gee, that was hard to figure out.)

    29. fleshman

Game center with a few achievement? Anyone? Just me? Okay :(

      1. Hirusan

I'd also like to see some achievements.

    30. willjryan

Instabuy. Don't have an iPad. Bit can't wait to play it on the phone.

    31. tubaros

Cool news :-) cloud saving would be good too...

    32. Toyota974

Looks like a great update, looking forwards to the improved visuals, and it's nice to know the game hasn't been abandoned like some (especially ports) are. Is it possible we could see a KOTOR II next year?

    33. pajman sarafzadeh

Awesome, now ahhh, can we have Kotor 2 as well please.

    34. kipbuis

Hi guys the release date is december 19th!

    38. Sean M.

I can't wait for this. This is my all time favorite western RPG game.

    39. free2play4eva

      Too expensive!

      1. bored2death

9 bucks too expensive? I wonder what a console game is to you. A fortune? Come on your paying 9 bucks for a full fledged console rpg. But I bet you'd probably wish it was free to play with timers.

        1. free2play4eva

Implemented properly there is nothing wrong with a freemium timer model :)

    40. RoxannDawson

I'm thinking about purchasing the game for my iPad-does anyone know if it needs internet to run?

    41. RoxannDawson

I'm thinking about purchasing the game for my iPad-does anyone know if it needs internet?

    42. REkzkaRZ

Clearly this is one significant reason that Disney bought Lucasfilm / Star Wars franchise.
The only upside I see in this is the opportunity to tease Star Wars nuts as 'Disney kids' rather than their old semi-legit 'scifi' hipster Lucas worshipper status. (And Disney has pledged to kick out a lot more Star Wars movies -- but that may not be a good thing. We'll see...)

That's right, "use the force" will soon by said by Mickey Mouse -- it's Disney's property now. (Yoda has a few parallels to a force-wielding green Mickey, anyway.)

      Enjoy your Disney metachlorians!!! :D

    43. lordyokomoto

      Universal update now up ;)))))))
