If there’s one thing I love in this world, it’s a roguelike dungeon crawler. That’s why I’m so pleased to have been pointed in the direction of Famaze from Oryx Design Lab. Described as a “turn based game blending elements of mazes, puzzles, and roguelike dungeon exploration", development on Famaze originally started like a hot ball of fire way back in the summer of 2010 before falling silent just a few months later. It was resurrected earlier this year, and with a new website and launch trailer recently released, it looks like this sucker might actually finally come out.
Oryx has put together a lovely official trailer, so definitely check that out, but I think for a better demonstration of what Famaze is all about you should watch this developer-made video below of a run-through of a dungeon floor.
As you can see, the upper portion of the screen gives you a low-fi map with just the bare essentials, like some of the earliest dungeon crawlers, but the bottom portion gives you an SNES-inspired closeup of the action. The levels are all procedurally generated, with 3 different classes to play as. Famaze also features a pretty silly premise where a Mad King turns the rutabaga citizens of his land into monsters to guard his kingdom while he runs off searching for the perfect rutabaga pudding recipe. As the hero, you infiltrate his dungeons to free the trapped rutabagas and crack the secret of this strange pudding recipe.
Famaze is heading to iOS as well as Android, PC and Mac, and if you’re the Steam playin’ type then you can vote for Famaze on Steam Greenlight too. Release is just a vague “coming soon" right now, but we’ll let you know if any more information pops up.
