The 1999 cult-classic racing game Re-Volt should be hitting the App Store in the next couple of weeks, according to a tweet by the head of Big Bit Ltd Nick Baynes. Eurogamer originally reported that an iOS version of Re-Volt was on its way back in July, with Korean company We Go Interactive picking up the license to the Re-Volt IP and tapping Baynes and his studio Big Bit to cover an iOS version. Baynes was one of the co-creators of the original Re-Volt back in 1999, bringing things full circle in kind of a kooky way.
Re-Volt gained a huge following back in the day for having tight controls, interesting “big world” environments, and a host of offensive weaponry to try and help you gain the upper hand against opponents. With a few buddies over and some extra controllers Re-Volt offered heated multiplayer moments that rivaled those of the legendary Mario Kart series. If you were on PC, you could partake in online multiplayer for up to 12 players. The original game even had a level editor for creating and sharing tracks. Here’s some gameplay footage from the PC version so you can get an idea of what a cool little title Re-Volt was.
It’s not known exactly what features will make it into the iOS version, or if it will be just a straight port or have enhancements of any kind. At least it shouldn’t be long before we find out all the details, and we’ll let you know just as soon as Re-Volt hits the App Store.

Yeah! iCloud support I hope...
The iPad version is launching with iCloud and it'll also be in the upcoming iPhone/iTouch update that will be launching soon :)
iPad only exclusive content, towers and maps?.....grrrrrr.....that's not fair I'm a huge fan of the franchise and can't afford an iPad just to play extra content..
Don't worry, we've got you covered :)
I smell an update...
What does an update smell like? ;-)
Like joy :D
Awesome. Got the iPhone version on my iPad and it looks terrible. Played it on my phone. But am super excited for the iPad release. Hopefully the pricing is a bit more reasonable then the first one which is $8. Yikes.
Can't wait to hear what you think of the game!
I will definitely keep you posted sir. Maybe with the money you make of this you can hire more people to get more excellence to me faster.
Seriously! If we can make a game like this with a small team, imagine what we could do with a bigger team...
maybe even one of these new fangled universal apps ;)
We will have to wait and see :)
Finally. I wonder why they didn't release both at the same time or make it universal.
Must be a lot of art assets that need to get ported over!
Tons of art assets :) We've got a small team, so it's easier for us to QA games that don't launch on multiple platforms at once. Trade off results in much higher quality, so it seems worthwhile.
Yes, but my frustration is that I bought the iPhone version only because you guys implied the iPad version might be a year away. I'm glad it is coming, but I can't help but feel a little manipulated and taken advantage of.
Hmm, when did they indicate it was a year away? All I've ever understood is maybe a month or two following iPhone version.
Hi Jared,
Please read this post from Alec: http://forums.toucharcade.c...
"4. This is the tough part. Fr1 for iPad came out a year after the iPhone version. In that time, we'd added 4 paid dlc maps to the iPhone version. When the iPad version launched, we just made those maps part of the core game and increased the price accordingly. The real gem in Fr1 iPad was the local multiplayer. So, our two options are make an up razzed version with the same content, or add content, which will take time. Fan feedback will determine what content we add, but it will also determine how much longer development on the iPad version will take."
My takeaway from Alec's comment was that Fieldrunners 2 HD was very far away, so I bought the game right away. This is why I feel frustrated.
Yeah, I suppose that statement wasn't very clear - I was thinking out loud there. If we delayed for multiplayer, it would have held our ship date back by a significant amount. We decided not to do that, allowing us to ship earlier.
Of course, if you'd like a refund, Apple should be able to help you out. Also, if there's anything I can do to ease your pain, let me know :) [email protected]
Hi Alec! I appreciate the response. I definitely don't want a refund, and I certainly would not want to take advantage of a small team to "ease my pain". You guys work hard, and I think hard work should be rewarded. You and the team put out a great product, and I think your support in the forums is stellar. I simply wanted the opportunity to explain why I feel a little frustrated about the situation. I think that had I known that Fieldrunners 2 HD was only a couple of months out from release, that I would have waited.
That said, I think it's great that you got the product out the door so quickly, and I know lots of people will be happy with the game. I'm sure to continue to support Atomic, and I will buy the game at some point, but I'll just hold off for a bit and stretch my initial "investment" a little longer! Best of luck to you and the team! :-)
Sorry you feel that way. There might have been some miscommunication on my part - nonetheless, I totally take responsibility. The launch date has always been totally up in the air, and it only became apparent that we were launching tomorrow as of a few weeks ago. Email me at [email protected] and I'll be happy to chat more.
Also in the same boat.
Well I couldn't wait for this version before I finally bought the SD, just to support Subatomic after the sweet update, didnt like it in 2x though, this iPad version will complete me XD
You complete us.
Here are some of the other new towers that our top scientists have been working on:

Any news on price? I'm hoping for <$4.99... :P
Mmmph, I'd much rather have a universal version of the original. More is not always better, especially if it unbalances the game. Oh wait, it was already unbalanced...
Zing... But we're trying to make it more balanced! We really appreciate player feedback on balancing, so email us at [email protected] if you have any thoughts or suggestions. We want to work to make our games absolutely perfect.
Going the non-universal route was a difficult decision. In the end, the main factor was that our team is small and launching on multiple platforms at once would hurt the game's quality because it would be much more difficult to catch and fix all the bugs that could happen to a game on multiple platforms.
Was Fieldrunners HD 1 ever patched for its achievement bugs? Literally no achievement would unlock in gamecenter.
We'll be shipping an update for that now that Fieldrunners 2 HD is out. Really sorry for the delay here, but all our focus has been on getting FR2 HD out the door. Expect to see the update for the original very, very soon. Thanks for your patience!
I really suck at this game... but I love it. Cant stop playing.
I will fork out for the ipad version as Ive been playing the lo-res on the ipad anyway.
We hope you enjoy it :)
I want this game so bad! I purchased the first one on IPad and DS,IPad being the best version.
Awesome! The iPad version is really looking sharp, so I hope you get a chance to check it out!
Will scores, stars, coins, and progress sync from the iPhone version to the iPad version I wonder?
Scores, stars, and progress will. We're working on a solution for coins, but we ran into too many issues with both saves randomly erasing all coins earned. Seemed better to not transfer them than risk all coins being lost permanently :-\
I just downloaded the HD version. Since I have little spae left on my ipad, I deleted 2, thinking I didn't need both (or all 3, depending on how you count).
And lost all of my coins. Which I'd been saving for something special.
ArGHb%^]^nN!!! So as a blast it all work around, I figured I'd simply start 100% fresh. So I reset. All of the warnings were much appreciated, but I clicked on through. Played the first one.....one star...then all of a sudden, I see my reset had been lost. Tried to reset again. Same thing. First level, get my star. And then all of progress is back..,,
I either want my coins back or a clean restart.....help?
Email us at [email protected] :)
What I'm really hoping for is more multiplayer maps like the two in fieldrunners 1. Me and my friends have had a blast playing those two maps and I've always hoped for more....?
No multiplayer maps at launch. This is something we're very eager to experiment with, though, but it looked like having multiplayer at launch would have delayed launch by far too long.
OPAN GANGNAM STYLE!!!
Really looking forward to this. I think TA's coverage leading up to the release of the non-universal sequel caught a lot of iPad gamers offside. The resulting s***storm was interesting but sometimes painful to read. I think both sides had a point. But at the end of the day, iPad gamers haven't had to wait too long for their release. Yes, I can see if you own both iPhone and iPad it might suck to not have one version across both, but come on. It's the developer's game, they bring it to us with a lot of hard work, and if your passion for the game is so strong that it makes you angry at them for not tailoring their releases to your specific gameplay choices... I think that's a little unreasonable. I also don't think they really implied the game was going to be a year away; they seemed to just say it could take some time for the HD version to appear (and it has been several weeks) from what I can recall. Looking forward to playing it. Am sure it will be worth the wait. And yep, I reckon it's going to be expensive for an iOS game. But it's still cheap compared to anything else. It's great that so many good iOS games are available for a buck. But that doesn't mean games that cost more are a bad deal. Especially when you read stories in the media (and linked to on TA) about how tough some devs are doing it.
Thanks for sticking up for us :) That said, I totally don't hold it against anyone that disagrees with us and encourage people to express their opinions - that information will help us improve our games and services in the future!
Alec, will I be able to continue my game from the iphone variant of Fieldrunners 2 if I'm logged into Gamecenter?
iCloud is coming to the iPhone version in the next update, v1.2, despite Fieldrunners 2 HD launching with it on the iPad. Once iCloud is on both, it will work flawlessly. Until then, you'll have to use iExplorer to transfer game save files manually (.sav, .usr files, specifically). Email [email protected] if you want detailed instructions.
When will this be available on Android. Ty
We'll be partnering up with an outside studio to help us with this soon. We're hoping to have it out before the end of 2012, but that's just my own speculation so take it with a grain of salt.
I'll stick with the iPhone version, cheaper and I'm not so much of a fan of the new mechanics of the game, it's feeling a bit pattern worn, where there's a limited tower choice and placement to achieve results without upgrades,
I'd really like to hear more of your feedback if possible. Email [email protected] if you'd like to share. Thank you!
As an owner of both an iPad and an iPhone, I wont be buying the iPad version. Nothing against the devs, I just dont see myself justified in shelling out cash twice for the same game, even if I would like to enjoy it on a larger screen in HD (I have an iPad 3).
I would even prefer a more expensive universal app upfront, than getting charged two times for the same thing. Its a principle thing, but still, all the best of luck to you guys.
Respectable decision! I appreciate you sharing your opinion in such an articulate way. As a gamer with a continually emptying wallet, I completely understand the predicament and find myself saying the same thing about other games frequently enough.
The non-universal route was also hard to swallow for me, as a gamer, until I saw the complexities involved with launching for more than one platform at once. I went into more details further up in these comments, but feel free to ask for details if you are interested.
Regardless, hopefully you'll get a chance to check out Fieldrunners 2 HD down the road. The game really looks amazing on the new Retina screen. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!
got the 1st game with all it's content on my ipt4, the wait is worth it coz of this news..finally i can buy this game in my ipad! wohoooo!
Can't wait to hear what you think! Have fun :)
It's out herein NZ now. It also has iCloud support. Neato!
Enjoy!
Finally!! So Happy. Don't care how much it is although they said $7.99. I'm staying up to 11:00
Can't wait for this game to come out.
Sorry, don't usually comment like this: Am I the only one seeing the Fieldrunner 2 logo/banner as a piece of underwear?
MERCH!
Any chance this is going to come out for Android
