TA Plays: ‘Mad Skills BMX’ – A Sidescrolling Racer With Swipe Controls

TouchArcade Rating:

This afternoon I showed Brad just how mad my skills are in Mad Skills BMX ($0.99). It’s another one of those side-scrolly physics-powered racing games, and feels like an evolution of the developer’s previous title, Mad Skills Motocross ($0.99).

The main difference here (aside from graphical upgrades and things like that) is the addition of a neat swipe control method. I’m still not really sure how I feel about it, since, weirdly enough, virtual buttons just seem more “natural" to me in games like this. I realize how crazy that sounds, but Brad and I dig into that as I play through the whole tutorial. We also get on a weird tangent regarding just how disappointing Tony Hawk Pro Skater’s Xbox Live Arcade re-release was. I’m not sure what that has to do with anything, but, whatever.

Reads news... (gets excited) Watches teaser... (scratches head)

      1. ducksFANjason

        Ditto

      2. REkzkaRZ

Wow, what a helpful teaser video! (NOT!)
You watch that and think, is there even a game here?!?!?!

    2. SexyPirate

OMFG! I've been waiting for this day for a long time. It seemed like an obvious place for a warhammer game. With things like hunters 1&2 and hero mages proving that it's possible.
      Seriously can't wait.

    3. SexyPirate

Yep have to agree while the news is amazing the teaser is rubbish.

    4. Frank Hopewell-Smith

YES! Loved Warhammer Quest - now I'm just wondering about the gameplay... I hope it's not action/adventure style - I want classic Warhammer action!

    5. db2

If it's based on the board game, then this is basically a fancier version of Hero Quest. In other words, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.

      1. EpicGamerDude

        Lol i totally need this!!!

    6. Faeryan

      Warhammer + Rodeo Games.. Sweet!
Just hoping that this time they squeeze in enough content. With both Hunters games the meaningful (story based) content seemed a bit lacking.
Some good long campaigns and the usual Rodeo Games quality and we have a winner.

Maybe introduce paid expansion campaigns instead of IAPs that ease and speed up the gaming even more.

Thinking the same thing, db2. But I really hope this opens the door to a turn-based 40K title. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.

      1. ducksFANjason

40k would be awesome! Bring me some of that please!

        1. Maniacfive

I'd be so mind blowing stoked with a version of Space Crusade. And the expansions as IAP. Or hell Space Hulk!

Actually, anything 40k. Death Angel? Come on FFG take my money!

    8. QPCloudy

So awesome! I assume this will be a warhammer temple run clone! lol jk

    9. ImJPaul

I remember watching my best friend play this game in elementary ad middle school. He never let me play cuz he was a douche. Now I can finally play. Hurray.

    10. Stro

omg omg omg omg omg omg A Wahammer game on iOS finally? *dies* x_X!

    11. Garrett Granger

Hope this is faithful to the board game. Spent sooo many hours playing it as a kid.

    12. SirFobos

I am beyond excited about this news. Just played my tabletop version last weekend along with some space hulk. This could be epic if done right.

    13. stutz

If this is asynchronous and stays faithful to the original, then I could see this taking the place of pocket heroes on my iPhone. Very cool news especially since used versions of the board game run for 400 bucks. Maybe this could convince fantasy flight games or games workshop (who has the license?) to do a reprint.

More info and honestly less excited. My guess is that it will try to be its own game that is 'inspired' by WHQ

      1. REkzkaRZ

Good link, helpful info -- MORE psyched!

    15. CrimsonOracle

This is very encouraging. Games Workshop only in the last few months started using digital publishing for their game books (their publishing arm has been in the eBook game for awhile and also does mp3 audio plays). The lack of any mobile game development (at least since 40k Squad Commander for Nintendo DS which was...disappointing) has had me scratching my head for awhile now. We're talking about a turn based combat game, which is basically ideally suited to the iPhone. Maybe its because most of their licenses are with THQ, and they're having serious financial issues.

Whatever the case, this is a majorly awesome news item for the board game geek in me.

    16. Decaf Table

Images look cool, but what's with the god awful voice acting? *shudders*

    17. REkzkaRZ

Exciting promise, annoying promo / voice.
Want to see: complex figures, detailed story w/o deviation from Warhammer world, option to level up & get gear & skills, cool variety in gameplay, a strategic component, option to turn off music & use your own music, etc.
I'd be fine with *NO* voice acting & no CG heads. (EVER!)

What could make a game *GREAT*?  No shopping (!!!), actual adventures where you might have to run b/c opponent could beat you -- but you can return stronger later & maybe win, and strategy vs "button mashing".

    18. Uksweeney

      Any update?

    19. SirFobos

Looks like the private beta will be starting soon. We may be seeing this in the next month!
