We are huge fans of Spiderweb Software, who does tremendous work serving a niche audience of enthusiasts with an appetite for old-school CRPG experiences. The kind of experiences that put Spiderweb on the map back in the ’90s, and to the delight of many, this largely one-person operation has continued on making those same kinds of games in the decades since. Their Geneforge series from the 2000s is particularly well-liked for its unique premises and very open-ended nature, and back in early 2020 it was announced that the first game in the series would be getting a remastered version and a release on modern desktop platforms as well as the iPad. That game, Geneforge – Mutagen HD ($9.99), launched on desktop in February of 2021 with the iPad version following in April. Well, seeing as there’s a whopping five games in the Geneforge series, it shouldn’t be surprising that they’re running it all back with the second game in the series. Here’s a look at Geneforge 2 – Infestation.
The playbook for the Geneforge 2 remaster is essentially the same as it was for the first game. Spiderweb launched a crowdfunding campaign about this time last year that was wildly successful, meaning there would be room (read: money) to add additional content and features to the game. Spiderweb has gone to the crowdfunding well for multiple projects in the past and really is a model citizen in how the whole process should work. They ask for just what they need to deliver the basics, with anything over the top going right back into making the project even more awesome. They are great at projecting a realistic timeline regarding when things will be finished, and are transparent through the whole process. Most importantly though is that they deliver a solid product in the end. Geneforge 2 doesn’t seem like it will be any exception. Their official PR has the remastered version launching on Windows, Mac, and iPad on March 27th, so keep an eye out for it this spring.
