SwitchArcade Round-Up: Reviews Featuring ‘RPG Time’, Plus ‘Kirby’s Dream Buffet’ and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for August 17th, 2022. In today’s article, we have a review for you courtesy of our pal Mikhail. After that, we take a look at the handful of new releases today. The big news is Kirby’s Dream Buffet, but there are a couple of other games that may catch your eye as well. After that, it’s sales time. The new sales, mostly consisting of Bethesda games, and the expiring sales, mostly consisting of… a lot of stuff, actually. Let’s get to it!

Reviews & Mini-Views

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright ($29.99)

DeskWorks’ RPG Time: The Legend of Wright has been an interesting game to follow over the years. When it was announced for Xbox and released earlier this year, I was surprised at how unique it felt to play. The more progress I made into it, the more I felt like DeskWorks’ adventure experience should’ve been on a portable device with a touchscreen. It felt like it was meant for touch and portable play.

Having recently been announced for Switch, PS4, and PC platforms, I was very hopeful that RPG Time: The Legend of Wright would control as I had hoped in handheld mode on Switch. The developers have done a fantastic job with the conversion on Nintendo’s hybrid system making it the best way to experience this adventure.

If you’ve not heard of RPG Time: The Legend of Wright, it plays out over a notebook and hand-drawn aesthetic by a budding game designer. Imagine yourself playing a virtual tabletop RPG with charming dialogue and a blend of a few gameplay styles. That is RPG Time: The Legend of Wright. It brings shoot ’em ups, adventure games, RPGs, and more together in a lovely package with a very good soundtrack.

Barring the perfect controls in handheld mode, RPG Time: The Legend of Wright also has great HD Rumble on Switch. This applies to playing docked as well with a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. While there are definite visual downgrades in image quality and more compared to playing it on Xbox Series X (as expected), the support for touchscreen controls and being able to play this on a portable make this the best version of RPG Time: The Legend of Wright right now.

rpg time switch vs xbox series x

While it was planned for mobile a while ago, I hope it does show up on iPad in the future. This is the perfect game to play on a nice touchscreen device. Shaun even played it back at TGS 2018. Hopefully it does show up on mobile eventually, but it feels perfect on Nintendo Switch in handheld mode. The controls don’t feel as nice when played docked or even on Xbox.

If you enjoy unique adventure games and charming stories, RPG Time: The Legend of Wright is an easy recommendation on Switch. It feels great to play in handheld mode, and I can’t get over how good the animation work and aesthetic is throughout the adventure. It initially might seem confusing in the screenshots, but this is the real deal. The only downside for some will be the game length at under 10 hours long. -Mikhail Madnani

New Releases

Kirby’s Dream Buffet ($14.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Poyo! Here’s another fun Kirby spin-off that can be enjoyed alone or with other players in almost any configuration. Two players on one system, up to four in local wireless, and up to four online are available. If I am understanding the game right, the idea is that you race across each obstacle course, collecting as many strawberries as you can. There are some minigames to play after the race, and then you end up in the battle round, where your collecting efforts will hopefully pay off in making you biggest boy around. I may have a review for this one, but I’m not sure yet.

Little League World Series Baseball 2022 ($49.99)

If you want a baseball game on your Switch and you don’t like MLB The Show, your options are pretty limited this year. I don’t know if Little League World Series Baseball 2022 is what you’re looking for, but it’s at least an option. This is certainly more of an arcade-style offering, with power-ups and special moves on the table. There are a few different modes to play, and twenty different fictional teams to choose from. Up to four players can join in on the fun via local multiplayer.

Robo Revenge Squad ($20.00)

Aliens are invading Earth, as they often do for some reason. I guess they really can’t get enough of Taco Bell? Can’t blame them, really. As part of the Robo Revenge Squad, you have to fend them off. Your robot is made from random bits of stuff like fridges, disco balls, chainsaws, and TVs. You’ll unlock more parts as you play, and while it’s all a bit on the repetitive side, you’ll almost certainly have a good time if you play in co-op with your friends as the robot gods intended. Up to four people can play together via local multiplayer. No online support, so you’ll have to have nearby friends or family members to enjoy the game to its fullest.

Tribes of Midgard ($19.99)

Tribes of Midgard is a game with two very different faces. If you play it alone or end up with a bad group, it’s kind of a miserable experience. Slide into that online multiplayer with the right people and you’ll have a blast. It’s basically a combination of a roguelite RPG with a survival game. You start each game with little more than the figurative clothes on your back, so you need to find resources and get equipped with better stuff as soon as possible. Why? Because every single night monsters will invade, and you don’t even want to know what happens when the Jotnar come knocking. You and your tribe of up to ten players are going to need to work together well to stay alive.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

It’s QuakeCon time, friends. That means it’s time to fill your boots with Bethesda games, with a particular focus on id Software’s stuff. The DOOM Slayers Collection and Wolfenstein II are hitting new low prices, but you really can’t go wrong with any of these games with these discounts. Over in the outbox, the latest sale on Hamster’s Arcade Archives games is coming to a close. A reminder that it is very rare for any of those games to go on sale twice, so if you see something you like it will probably never be this cheap again. Other stuff worth considering: AI The Somnium Files and its sequel, the Picross games, the Danganronpa games, Filmechanism, and Steins;Gate. Check those lists!
