‘Hearthstone’s Year of the Hydra Kicks Off with the Launch of the “Voyage to the Sunken City” Expansion on April 12th

We’ve known about Hearthstone’s next big expansion, titled Voyage to the Sunken City, for a while now, but Blizzard has also teased that they’d be revealing the full roadmap for where they’ll be going with the game now that their most recent season, the Year of the Gryphon, is now wrapping up. Today they’ve taken the wraps off of what the game’s new season will be, and it’s called the Year of the Hydra. First and foremost, where Year of the Gryphon was all about adding in a ton of new modes and ways to play Hearthstone, the dev team says that Year of the Hydra will be less about adding in brand new modes and more about fleshing out all the game’s existing modes with new content and features. For details on the Voyage to the Sunken City expansion, as well as an overview of what else is planned for the Year of the Hydra, check out this developer video.

As always, an even more in-depth breakdown of the Year of the Hydra can be found over on the Hearthstone blog. This season looks to offer quite the shakeup to the game, with 57 cards rotating out of the Core Set but 72 cards coming in making for a total of 250 cards, 15 more cards than last season. When the new expansion arrives, it also means that older expansions Ashes of Outland, Scholomance Academy, and Madness at the Darkmoon Faire will be rotated out to make room. Battlegrounds will also be reorganizing its major events into Seasons similar to Hearthstone’s expansions themselves, and Mercenaries will now be saving up any of its new goodies for X.4 updates so it has a chance to shine a bit without major updates to other modes stealing the limelight. Version 23.0 of Hearthstone is available in the App Store right now and you can get the full breakdown of what it includes on the Hearthstone blog. Voyage to the Sunken City is all set to launch on April 12th which will officially begin the Year of the Hydra.
