SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Atelier Sophie 2’, ‘Moto Roader MC’, ‘Aeternum Quest’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for February 25th, 2022. In today’s article, we look at the remaining releases of the week plus a few stragglers that slipped past me yesterday. It turned out to be a lot. Still getting the hang of Nintendo’s new site design. I think I’ve got them all this time, at least at the time of writing. There’s also a rather large list of new sales to go through, plus the sales set to expire this weekend. Let’s get to it!

New Releases

Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream ($59.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Here’s your regular dose of Atelier fluff. We’ve spent the last couple of years with Ryza, and I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of her. But for now, we’re checking back in with the protagonist of 2015’s Atelier Sophie to see what she got up to after she left Kirchen Bell. You know how this works by now, friends. Turn-based battles, crafting, and lots of colorful characters. I’ll have a full review of this one soon, but Atelier fans can dive in without fear.

Moto Roader MC ($6.99)

In recent months, Ratalaika has rereleased a couple of Genesis games from Masaya on modern platforms. Well, here’s another Masaya game, but this time it comes from one of the other 16-bit consoles: the PC Engine CD. You know, the TurboGrafx. Anyway, this is a Sprint-style single-screen racer. Though this isn’t saying much, it’s probably the best game in the Moto Roader series. Between this and the Valis Collection, we are positively drowning in Turbo games on Switch lately. I’ll have a review of this soon, but in terms of features it’s almost identical to Ratalaika’s other recent emulation efforts.

Aeternum Quest ($9.99)

This game describes itself as a “throwback to old 90s ’64’ styled JRPGs", and that immediately had me thinking. Usually when someone tosses out a ’64’, they mean the Nintendo 64. But there were only a few games I would say even lightly brushed up against the JRPG genre on the system. A little further investigation shows that the developers were hoping to pay homage to Quest 64 with this game. Well, every game is someone’s favorite, I suppose. The combat system is different, but you can certainly see the inspiration. If you happen to be one of those folks with fond memories of Quest 64, you may want to drop the tenner. Not like you’re going to see a whole ton of other spiritual successors to that game.

Pudding Monsters ($4.99)

ZeptoLab’s Pudding Monsters comes to the Switch in about as direct a form as possible, right down to requiring you to play in handheld mode due to forcing touch controls and portrait mode. It puts a slightly higher upfront purchase price and cuts out the IAPs, leaving you with some pure puzzling fun. There are one hundred and twenty-five levels of monster-merging fun. Create unique creatures by joining pudding monsters in various shapes and make use of their various powers to help you clear each stage.

Plunderer’s Adventures ($4.99)

Marrying another tried-and-true game concept with a little titillation is essentially the standard operating procedure for eastasiasoft at this point. This time, it’s a base defense game where you play as a pirate captain named Riley as she commands her crew of cute ladies to loot other ships, plunder all the booty, and fend off any marauders foolish enough to attack. The gameplay is as standard as it gets for a lane-based defense game. The main gimmick here is that you will unlock some sexy pictures of Riley and her crew as you play.

#1 Anagrams Sudokus Bundle ($5.99)

As you might expect, this is a bundle of #1 Anagrams and #1 Sudokus. You get a ton of both types of puzzles at one reasonable price. As always, be mindful that the unbundled versions are on sale for a lower price. Not much else to add.

Ammo Pigs: Cocked and Loaded ($4.99)

Cascadia Games’ Ammo Pigs: Cocked and Loaded brings its brand of run and gun action to the Switch. Explore the levels, evade the obstacles, and lay down some serious fire power on your foes in order to rescue helpless chickens from the cunning machines that stalk them. A fun game at a reasonable price.

One Gun Guy ($4.99)

One gun. One guy. One level. One boss. But hey, it’s a really long level. This is an action-platformer that has you make your way through a very lengthy single level full of enemies and traps, and battle a boss at the end. There are check points, power-ups, and a hard mode for those who want a little extra spice. It seems okay, but I haven’t been able to play it myself yet.

Checkers Minimal ($4.99)

Time for another Minimal game from the folks at Hook Games, this time covering the popular game of Checkers. You can play American Checkers, English Draughts, International Checkers, and other rule variations. There’s an online multiplayer mode with global leaderboards and an Elo rating system. You can also play local multiplayer, or battle against the AI.

Plumber Hero ($2.29)

Gametry has another probable template flip for us today. It’s another one of those puzzlers where you need to connect the pipes to help the water flow. Rotate the pipe pieces until it all works out. You get forty stages’ worth. The eShop equivalent of litter box liner.

Flip the Buddy ($2.99)

Pix Arts has another probable template flip for us today. It’s handheld only, so it’s probably an Android template. I don’t know, I don’t feel like looking it up this time. You flip your choice of buddy character across a level, making sure that whenever it comes down, it has some kind of object under it. Low-tier junk, even for three bucks.

World War: Tank Battle ($14.99)

If you’ve ever found yourself playing World of Tanks Blitz and thought you were having too much fun playing with other people, this one might be for you. It’s a single-player 3D tank game set in a vaguely World War 2-ish setting. Complete various missions, collect and upgrade tanks, and try to reach the ending that the game description calls “impressive". Not the most ambitious thing around, but I think it does an okay job of doing what it means to.

An American Werewolf in L.A. ($4.99)

Hey, a five-dollar Switch beat-em-up. Those are somewhat less common than platformers. This one is a retro throwback to the 1980s, because of course, and you play as a werewolf trying to battle his way out of town. There are five stages, and you can have a buddy join you via local multiplayer. Doesn’t look like the fanciest cat’s pajamas or anything, but I’m sure you could find less constructive things to do with a fiver.

amazin’ George 2 ($23.00)

“JRPG-style games featuring cat party members" is a larger category than you might expect. Here is another one, offering a relatively brief and mechanically standard turn-based RPG with an unusual hero and a somewhat interesting story. I’m baffled by the price, as the game is a mere six bucks on Steam and it feels like that’s about where it should be. For almost four times the price, there are far better ways to get your RPG kicks on Switch.

SpelunKing: The Mine Match ($9.99)

This is a match-3 puzzler where you’re digging around in twenty-five areas filled with resources that can be matched and mined. There are more than ninety special challenge room puzzles where you’ll have to consider your moves carefully, and lots of upgrades and other goodies to pick up as you progress. Your ultimate goal is to help rebuild the town and find your grandfather’s lost items by making your way to the very bottom of the mine.

Choju Giga Wars ($6.99)

A fairly straightforward castle defense game with some decidedly unique units and an art style all its own. Battle the Robunny Revolutionary Army with a wide array of creatures and the powerful cannons of your moon ship, Tsukihime. It feels similar to games like Legendary Wars or the Battle Cats, and that’s not a bad thing.

15in1 Solitaire ($2.99)

Well, it’s another solitaire game. It includes fifteen different variations, just like it says on the tin.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Hollow Knight for half-price? It’s hard to find a nicer deal than that. Indeed, it has been two and a half years since Hollow Knight last went on sale on the eShop. It might be some time before it gets discounted again, so act now if you want it. The Blaster Master Zero trilogy is also on sale, so you might want to grab those if you have had your eye on them. Not too much in the weekend outbox, but give it a look too.
