SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Kensei: The Second Turn HD’, ‘Unlock the Cat’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 14th, 2022. Yesterday was a big day, but today shows that we’re still warming up the engines for this year. There are a handful of new releases, but nothing nearly as enticing as what we saw in yesterday’s list. Normally we would at least have a bunch of new sales to dig into, but even that end of things is a bit light today. There are a few good discounts to consider, but really only a few. We’ve got those summaries and lists anyway, friends. Let’s get into the games!

New Releases

The Shadow You ($9.99)

This game bills itself as a horror adventure, but don’t come into it expecting any serious puzzles to solve or anything. It follows the story of a new couple whose relationship goes through various trials and tribulations while at the same time a mysterious girl has to deal with another reality filled with various terrors. Yes, there is a connection here. Some rather rough writing hurts this game’s narrative aims, which is a problem in that this game is mostly about the story. Indeed, the gameplay bits are even rougher. Some cool ideas here, but very hard to recommend.

Unlock the Cat ($3.99)

You know those wood block puzzles where you need to slide the pieces out of the way to allow one piece to escape? That is what this is, but the wood blocks are stones and the target piece is a cat that will only move forwards or backwards. Move the stones out of the way, slide the cat out the exit, move on to the next stage. Forty levels set across four different themes. I appreciate that the developer at least tried to dress it up.

Kansei: The Second Turn HD ($7.99)

This is the next in the series of visual novel adventures that started with Jisei: The First Case HD. Suffice it to say, if you enjoyed that game you will certainly want to proceed with this one. If you didn’t, I don’t think Kansei will change your mind. And if you haven’t played Jisei, you really don’t want to start with this one. You play as a teenager with the ability to relive the final moments of any dead body he touches, and you once again get pulled into a nasty mess. Make your choices carefully, and you may solve the case and stay alive. Choose poorly, and things may go… less well.

Pinball Jam ($24.99)

Well, I suppose it was only a matter of time before this happened. You know those three-dollar pinball games that have been bundled six ways to Sunday? Here’s the ultimate bundle. All twelve games at a fairly modest discount, and you know it’s likely to go on sale often judging by the previous bundles. I still don’t think these pinball games are worth it given all of the really high-quality alternatives on Switch, and I’ll probably feel that way no matter how many ways they find to make them cheaper.

Space Stella: The Unknown Planet ($14.99)

This is a third-person shooter from the folks at HitGames Studio and TROOOZE, two names that do not exactly make me feel confident in the quality of this title. It has a science fiction theme and you’ll largely be blasting away aliens with your arsenal of weapons. There’s a story to play through, plus a couple of extra modes to keep the action going after you’ve finished it. Single-player only.

Turbo Shot (Free)

A free-to-play action game making its way over from the mobile market, Turbo Shot offers both a single-player campaign and online multiplayer for up to twelve players at once. Lots of things to unlock and use, and you can of course buy the Turbo Pass for each season to get your hands on more goodies. It does seem to be relatively well-liked by the players, at least. Well hey, it’s free to try if you’re interested.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Some sales on new releases like Eschatos and Eternal Radiance, a great deal on Cris Tales, and some deep discounts on the Secret Files and Lost Horizon adventure games. Those are the highlights of the somewhat small list of new sales today. Not too much in the weekend outbox, but do keep in mind that the huge list of sales from last week will expire on Monday. Many of those games won’t see discounts again for quite a while, I’d imagine, so do spend a little of your time on the weekend looking over your wish lists.
