Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 17th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a bit of surprise news to dig into before we wade into the new releases for the day. A bunch of games rolled in that weren’t on the schedule, but I wouldn’t exactly characterize today’s crop as a high-quality one on the whole. Not bad, but certainly not like yesterday by any means. Beyond that, we’ve got an absolute ton of new sales to check out. Like… hundreds of games. Saints Row IV is, like, three bucks. Wild. Let’s get down to business!
News
Five More SEGA Genesis Games Added to Switch Online Expansion Pack
Okay, so it turns out that Paper Mario isn’t the only retro game to be added to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack this month after all. Without the usual advance notice, five new games have been added to the SEGA Genesis app for Expansion Pack subscribers to enjoy. Altered Beast, Sword of Vermilion, Dynamite Headdy, Thunder Force II, and ToeJam & Earl are all waiting for you if you update. An interesting spread, to say the least. Altered Beast is a common participant in SEGA’s retro rereleases, and holds a lot of memories for Genesis owners. Dynamite Headdy is around more often than not, and serves as a nice extra dose of Treasure goodness. ToeJam & Earl is a game way ahead of its time, and could perhaps be called one of the earlier roguelites. Sword of Vermilion isn’t seen that often, but it’s a unique RPG by SEGA AM2 that served as an early showcase for the console’s power. Finally, Thunder Force II is a top-down multidirectional shooter that hasn’t ever been rereleased in the West until now. Very good batch overall.
New Releases
Aspire: Ina’s Tale ($12.99)
This is a brief but lovely puzzle platformer about a young woman who wakes up from a long slumber inside of a tower she was trapped in. She has to search the tower for a way out, and perhaps along the way learn why she was imprisoned in the first place. It really is a gorgeous game, with well-crafted visuals and really nice audio. The gameplay is decent enough that it won’t push you away while you take in the game’s superb sights and sounds. I wouldn’t put it on the level of something like GRIS, but it kind of leans in that direction.
Forgotten Hill Disillusion ($4.99)
A puzzle adventure where you explore a creepy museum, Forgotten Hill Disillusion sees you solving puzzles with a point-and-click style interface. As you might guess from the name, a lot of the things you’ll see in your journey through the museum should not be taken at face value. A reasonable price, at the very least. Not sure if it’s my kind of thing, but it could be yours.
Him & Her 3 ($9.99)
Wait, what happened to Him & Her 2? Oh well. This is a continuation of the series, though it seems to be more of a normal platformer than the quirky original. The first one was cute and only cost a buck. I’m not sure this one has quite what it needs to jump up to ten bucks. But if you really loved the original game’s aesthetic, you’ll certainly get more of that here.
Pixel Game Maker Series Biggerman.io ($5.49)
This one is kind of a variant on Slither.io. You are a weird-looking guy. You have to absorb weird-looking guys that are smaller than you to grow bigger, allowing you to absorb more weird-looking guys. You can also smash objects to find more little weird-looking guys to absorb. You can play alone or go up against a few friends in four-player local multiplayer. Seems like something that should have online play, but it doesn’t.
Escape from Mirrorland ~ The Adventures of Nyanzou&Kumakichi: Escape Game Series ~ ($4.90)
Cape’s Escape Game 5th Room ($9.80)
Here are a couple more room escape puzzle games from publisher AlignmentSharp. As usual, you can find these on mobile and can play them for free with some ad support. Also as usual, the translations are very rough and most likely the result of feeding the script through a machine translator. Oddly charming, somehow. Escape from Mirrorland is shorter and easier than Cape’s Escape Game 5th Room, but they’re both rather beginner-friendly as games of this genre go. If you like previous efforts from these series, you’ll be content with these installments.

I’m grouping these together because they kind of fit together. It seems that the Pixel Game Maker Series games are doing a Game Boy-inspired thing here. They’ve created a fake console called the Game Buddy, and these three games can be considered its launch titles. JEWELiNX is the Tetris analog, a falling block puzzler where you need to match similar jewels and try to make chains. Not bad. OUMUAMUA calls Alleyway to mind, which of course was a knock-off of Atari’s Break Out. This one has some elements of Arkanoid, in that power-ups will drop from some blocks. Finally CHAM THE CAT ADVENTURE (why are we shouting?) is a pretty clear homage to Super Mario Land with a few Castlevania-ish elements thrown in. It will be interesting to see where the Game Buddy goes from here.

Wow, that was a lot more than I expected. A bunch of Square Enix games on sale, which is nice. As mentioned at the top, Saints Row IV is under three dollars, which is a wild price. The Picross games are on sale! I don’t know. There’s a whole bunch of good stuff in the list, so I recommend you look through it. As for the weekend outbox, the SaGa games are finishing up their latest sales. It’s hard to say when we’ll see such deep discounts on them again, so make your decision soon on them.
