Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for November 22nd, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a couple of reviews for you to check out. I’m still working on Pokemon, but both Airborne Kingdom and Shapeshooter are in the evaluation spotlight. There’s a single new release to look at, and it’s not very impressive. We’ve also got the usual lists of new and expiring sales for you, and those are a bit more interesting. Let’s get going!
Reviews & Mini-Views
Airborne Kingdom ($24.99)
In most ways, Airborne Kingdom is a very typical simulation game. Gather resources, build your kingdom, and research new technologies that will give you access to even more stuff. And it does those things as well as you could hope with a console interface. It’s a little simplified in some respects, as your denizens will automatically assign themselves to various jobs. But taken as a basic sim, it hangs together nicely. Airborne Kingdom has a very strong gimmick, however. The kingdom you are building is airborne, and it’s not stationary by any means. You’re on a road trip with your floating city, meeting others and trying to complete missions to recruit more people to your cause. Oh, and nabbing resources from the ground as you go.
That strong, unique premise and sound execution of the fundamentals makes Airborne Kingdom a good entry in the simulation genre. If anything, the main weak point of the game itself is that it doesn’t do more with its intriguing world-building. Veterans of the genre may also find the game to be a little too easy, as once you get the ball rolling it’s a rather simple matter to keep on growing. This port adds a few more issues on top of the pile, unfortunately. This game is screaming for mouse controls, and trying to manipulate all of the fiddly bits with a stick and buttons can be frustrating thanks to a sluggish cursor. There are some minor technical issues too, but nothing outside of the ordinary as far as Switch ports go. It’s worth a punt for genre fans for its creative ideas and lovely visual style alone, but the Switch may not be the best place to enjoy it.

Shapeshooter ($3.99)
Like many of this publisher’s other offerings, Shapeshooter is a fun action game that can occupy a lazy hour or two. You control a tank that moves along the rails of each stage, taking out the enemies that you meet along the way and avoiding various traps. You have two different colors of shots, and you’ll need to match them to the appropriate enemies. There are power-ups that will give you extra weapons, and rings you can pick up to buy permanent upgrades for your tank. It’s not the most exciting of affairs, but for the meager asking price it delivers well enough.
