SwitchArcade Round-Up: Reviews Featuring ‘Monster Harvest’ and ‘Rustler’, Plus New Releases and the Latest Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 8th, 2021. My fever broke late last night and I’m feeling a good bit better today. As such, we are back with a vengeance. Well, at least as much of vengeance as a Wednesday can muster. We’ve got a bit of news, a couple of reviews, some new releases summaries, and the ever-present lists of incoming and outgoing discounts. Let’s check it all out!

The Latest ‘Smash Bros.’ Event Reminds Us All of Our Mortality

Okay, so I missed last week’s event. The news came in late, and Thursday was a bit wild. It’s going to be a bit wild this week, too. But anyway, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event news came in on-time this week, and that means we have no problems. This time it’s an event celebrating… wait, this can’t be right. It says it’s celebrating the GameCube’s 20th anniversary. Oh no. If the GameCube is 20 then I’m… oh dear. I need to sit down. Assuming you are taking this better than I am, you can look forward to this Spirit Board event when it kicks off this Friday and runs through the weekend as usual. Defeat the GameCube-related Spirits that appear to earn more gold, which is something you can always use.

Reviews & Mini-Views

Monster Harvest ($19.99)

The idea here is to combine a Pokemon-style monster-catching RPG with a farming simulation along the lines of Story of Seasons, and while I wouldn’t expect a game of Monster Harvest‘s scale to challenge any of the kings of those genres, it’s unfortunate how short this game falls in many regards. I can’t pretend to know what happened in its development, but it feels like in trying to do too many things it ends up not doing any of them in satisfying or deep way. The farming side of things is a little better than the RPG side of things, but there are so many games on the Switch that offer a more satisfying experience, it’s hard to recommend this one. Add in a bevy of bugs, and this lands firmly in the so-so bucket.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Rustler ($29.99)

I love the idea of a medieval Grand Theft Auto-style game, especially one that goes for a comedic approach that calls back to the goofier roots of that series. I just wish that Rustler executed better on the concept. The awkward controls, annoying mission design, and a sense of humor that tries way too hard all add up to a game that would be tough to love even without any technical issues. And I’m afraid to say that there are plenty of those to go around. Good concept, but that only takes you so far.

SwitchArcade Score: 2.5/5

New Releases

Frontier Quest ($11.99)

This looks like it could be fun, but I can’t be too sure just yet as I haven’t had a chance to play it. Reviews on other platforms seem reasonably positive, so that’s something. It’s mostly a puzzle game with some light RPG bits, as you need to bring the correct equipment to deal with the trials you’ll face on each trail. On each journey you’ll gather materials and use them to upgrade the town when you get back. There are various characters to meet as you complete quests and defeat foes. Seems to be a bit of a slower-paced affair, but if that’s what you’re after there’s nothing wrong with that.

Idle Inventor – Factory Tycoon ($10.99)

BoomBit takes a break from releasing ports of its free-to-play mobile driving games to release a port of its free-to-play idle game, Idle Inventor. This is a pretty straightforward idle tapper-type game, and if you want a taste of what it is like you can always check it out for free on your mobile device. Personally, I’m not that into it.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Hey, that’s not a bad batch of new sales at all given the small size of the list. Of note today are Cris Tales, Rigid Force Redux, Shieldwall Chronicles, and Lost Words: Beyond the Page. Of course, that list of expiring sales is considerably larger. Alex Kidd, Blasphemous, Hotshot Racing, and Umurangi Generation are among the games of interest that will be ending their discounts soon. Have a careful look through those lists and see what catches your attention, naturally.
