Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for August 13th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a whole bunch of new releases to check out. It’s not as good of a list as yesterday, but it’s rare to have days of that level. We’ve got summaries of all of today’s games, plus a whole bunch of new sales for you to check out. I’m pretty happy that Spelunky and Spelunky 2 finally have confirmed release dates. I’ll be diving back into that mess all over again on August 26th when they hit Switch. Well, let’s look at what today has to offer, shall we?
New Releases
Cardaclysm: Shards of the Four ($14.99)
Some days are worse than others, and I’d imagine if you’re a wizard a day where you accidentally unleash the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse would qualify as a pretty bad one. All you have to fight back against them is a deck of magical cards, but it fortunately should be enough. After all, this is a dungeon-crawling card-battling RPG. The reviews for this game in its PC form have been mixed so far, with many of the negative reviews pointing out an uneven difficulty curve and some pacing issues. That said, there seem to be plenty of people who enjoy it just fine. Which one will you be? I can’t say for sure, but I will say that if you can afford the extra cost of picking up Shadowverse, that’s probably a safer bet all around for scratching your card-battling itch this week.
Scrap Garden ($6.99)
This is a game about a robot who is trying to find out why all of the other robots in the world stopped working. To do that it will have to make its way through six different areas, solving puzzles and doing some light platforming along the way. I like the character a lot and the game certainly has its charms, but it’s ultimately just a bit on the boring side. The price is reasonable though, and it may be a bit more interesting for younger players. Reviews weren’t terribly kind for the PC version, but I think it’s more middling than bad.
Sudoku Classic ($5.99)
I feel like we’re at the point where most people have all the Sudoku games on their Switch that they need, but you would also think that about Picross and my goofy butt keeps buying those. Anyway, this one comes from G-MODE, probably best known these days in the West as the current owners of the Data East catalog. They’ve clearly put a bit of extra effort into this Sudoku app, with lots of optional assists and a rather nice presentation. There are three hundred puzzles to solve, and you can use either button or touch controls as you like. If you love solving Sudoku puzzles, this looks like a rather nice game for the price.
.cat Milk ($9.99)
Okay, well I guess that first .cat game sold enough copies that we’re going back to this again. In .cat Milk you guide a white cat through tricky platforming challenges to help it reach the milk waiting for it at the end. Ten dollars is far too much for what the game offers, and apparently the publisher agrees because it’s launching with a sale that carves the price down to a more reasonable two dollars. Given the surplus of better platformers on the Switch you can get even at low prices, I’m not sure I’d even recommend it at that price. But some will buy it and I’m sure we’ll be looking at .cat With A Vengeance in a month or two.
Fort Triumph ($19.99)
This parody of the fantasy genre offers up some turn-based tactical gameplay with procedurally-generated battle maps. Lead your heroes through the story mode or hop in for a quick skirmish, but be careful. Permanent death can and will happen if you’re careless. The environment itself can be your weapon, as you can push boulders or knock enemies through walls. There’s a strategy layer to the game that has the whiff of Heroes of Might & Magic about it, but I don’t feel like that end of it is as well-implemented as the battle system is. It really lays the humor on thick though, so be sure you’re willing to put up with that. I’ll have a review of this one soon.
Whiskey Mafia: Frank’s Story ($5.99)
Set in the 1920s, this game tells the story of a mailman named Frank who dreams of hitting the big time. His buddy, a war veteran, comes to him with the idea of opening a bar together. But as much as it seems like they’ve taken the first step towards success, they’ve actually walked into a dangerous world. From hostile competitors to loan sharks to unruly customers, the obstacles are many. Frank’s going to have to get his hands dirty if he wants to reach his dreams. There’s a decent story here and I do like the presentation, but the actual gameplay just isn’t very fun. Those who can put up with a lot of rough edges may want to roll the dice on it anyway, given the reasonable price.
Arcade Archives Kurikinton ($7.99)
Over to a Taito game this week in Arcade Archives, and this time it’s the 1988 action game Kurikinton, an homage to the many popular martial arts comics, movies, and animations of the time. It features some nice visuals, but the game itself is rather limp. Not really something I would recommend to any but the avid Arcade Archives collectors. Still, it’s nice to see these lesser-known titles made accessible again, and Hamster has done its usual fine job in bringing the game to the Switch in as fine a form as possible.
PAW Patrol The Movie: Adventure City Calls ($39.99)
The PAW Patrol is back in their third game for the Nintendo Switch! This one is apparently based on the movie, which is hitting some theaters around the world right about now. It’s a 3D platformer where you can play as a number of the pups as they explore Adventure City and try to save the day by pulling off amazing rescues. With lots of collectibles, colorful graphics, mini-games, and support for local two-player co-op, it seems like a safe choice for kids who love PAW Patrol. Wow, a movie tie-in game. We don’t see too many of those these days on consoles.
WitchSpring3 [Re:Fine] – The Story of Eirudy ($39.99)
Wow, I’m not sure what to do with this. WitchSpring3 is a relatively good Atelier-style RPG, albeit one with a lower budget than even the somewhat humble efforts from Koei Tecmo. Regular readers of the site may have already played it, in fact. It came out on iOS around three years go, after all. This Switch version of the game is a solid port, with some noteworthy improvements in the presentation in particular. All that being said, the mobile version of the game sells for $3.99. This port is literally ten times the price, and there’s nothing here to justify that. If you don’t mind playing the game on your mobile device, you should do so. Use the thirty-six dollars you’ll save to buy a bunch of other fun games. Maybe the other three WitchSpring games on mobile? You could do that and still have almost twenty-five bucks more in your pocket. Good game, good port, wild pricing. Phew.
Barry the Bunny ($4.99)
Hey, someone activate the Five-Dollar Switch 2D Platformer signal! Barry the Bunny is a fairly straightforward platformer where you play as a bunny who walks upon two feet, like some manner of demon. His ultimate goal is to repair all of the bridges so that all the little bunnies can return home. I guess they burnt the old bridges? Very careless, I say. Walk, jump, grab the items, and toss stuff as you make your way through four different worlds filled with enemies, traps, obstacles, and carrots. The main gimmick is that you need to pick up wood in order to build bridges at certain spots. It’s fine. Nothing special, but at five dollars it doesn’t really have to be.
Faraday Protocol ($24.99)
This is a first-person puzzle game, with the biggest puzzle being what the heck is going on in the story. But I suppose it’s all about those little puzzles that you’ll solve as you make your way through its rooms and areas. You play as an interstellar archeologist, which sounds like a pretty awesome job. Wonder if it’s too late for me to shift tracks? Your company has sent you to a heretofore unexplored star system to seek out the source of a mysterious signal. Only by solving the many trials of the station you’ve landed on will you have any hope of figuring out the truth. Use your Bia-Tool to re-distribute energy and make your way through the various obstacles and tricky set-ups, and see if you can get to the bottom of things. They’re a bit like circuit-style puzzles. Not a bad game as these kinds of things go.
art of rally ($24.99)
Yes, the title is meant to be written like that. One of those stylistic choices, which is appropriate for a stylish game like this. It’s from the developer of Absolute Drift and it shares a lot with that game. A rather simple and enjoyable take on the whole rally concept, albeit one with a fair bit of challenge backing it. I’d love to recommend it except for one familiar bugbear: technical issues. The game by its nature has a rather lo-fi look to it, with a zoomed-out camera so that you can see more of the pretty view around you. Unfortunately, the resolution on this particular version is really all over the place, making it hard to enjoy those sights. It could be buggy, it could be a lack of optimization, but whatever the reason it’s a bit hard to swallow in this condition.
Pixel Game Maker Series Buraigun Galaxy Storm ($11.99)
This is a decent vertical shoot-em-up that feels like it’s paying homage to Toaplan’s games in its mechanics. You have three different weapon types and two formations to choose from. There are two big gimmicks to it. First, time slows down every time you get close to taking damage. Neat idea, kind of awkward in practice. The speed ends up being weirdly inconsistent and it feels like you’re taking damage even when you aren’t. Which brings us to the second gimmick. Your pilot appears on the side of the screen, and she reacts rather… expressively to the action. Facial expressions, sounds, and of course chest bounces. Her reactions are so strong that it contributes to that feeling you are taking hits when they’re actually near-misses. Not bad, but you could probably find better shoot-em-ups at this price point on the Switch.
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
Admittedly, somewhat less impressive than last week’s sales. What can you do? It’s nevertheless a rather large list that took me a while to type up, so let’s find some good stuff in there. Personally, I recommend Pankapu, Aggelos, and Immortals Fenyx Rising. As for the weekend outbox, it’s a bit more interesting than usual. Sure, the 2K Games stuff will be back on sale again within a few weeks, but if you have any interest in that Sydney Hunter game I recommend grabbing it. That one rarely goes on sale. Check those lists as always, friends.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. We’ll be back next week with more games to check out. A quick glance at the schedule shows Space Invaders Invincible Collection, Swords & Souls: Neverseen, and Rush Rally Origins as immediate stand-outs, but I’m sure there will be some surprises as well. I’ll be splitting my weekend between Fantasian (time to finally review it now that it’s finished) and Axiom Verge 2. What are you all looking to play? I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
