SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Mail Mole’ Free DLC Coming, Plus ‘Pokemon Unite’ and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for July 21st, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a few pieces of news to look at before heading into the new releases of the day. The big gun is the free-to-play MOBA Pokemon Unite, but there are a few other points of interest as well. After that, it’s just the usual sales lists. Some decent games to consider in both the incoming and outgoing discounts today. Let’s get to work!

Charming Platformer ‘Mail Mole’ Gets Free ‘Xpress Deliveries’ Update Next Week

Have you played Mail Mole? It’s a really awesome 3D platformer with some neat mechanics of its own. I gave it a 4/5 when I reviewed it a few months back, finding it to be a really pleasant experience on the whole. As such, I was quite happy to hear that the game will be receiving some free DLC on July 29th. Titled Xpress Deliveries, it includes eight new speed-focused levels, some new costumes based on some popular indie games, a new photo mode, a Boss Rush, and some new speedrun options. It’s a very substantial DLC relative to the size of the original game, and it’s absolutely free to owners of the base game. Sweet.

More Nintendo Switch Online Retro Games Coming July 28th

Well, it is about that time, isn’t it? Even though Nintendo says they’re not on a fixed release schedule for these retro games for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, there’s a pattern if you look for it. Anyway, this next batch is set to hit next Wednesday, and it’s… well, it’s a really atypical selection to say the least. Three games, and all of them are Super NES titles. The first is Interplay’s claymation-based platformer Claymates. Next we’ve got platformer Jelly Boy, originally developed by Probe and published by Ocean in Europe only. The selection is rounded out with puzzler Bombuzal, which originally saw Western release on the Super NES under the name Ka-Blooey. Yes, interesting choices. Very interesting.

The Next ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Event Has a Bone to Pick

Following the exciting five-day event that introduced new Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin spirits to the game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is back to its old tricks this time around. We’ve got a Spirit Board event incoming this weekend, and the theme this time is bones. Yeah, bones. I don’t know. The thing about Smash is that you could probably pull a random word out of the dictionary and find enough Spirits to do an event. Lay the smack down on these boney Spirits and you’ll earn more gold than usual. The event starts on Friday and runs the usual three days through the weekend.

New Releases

Pokemon Unite (Free)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

What’s this one? Oh right, the Pokemon MOBA that had everyone so furious when it was announced last year. Well, it’s here now. It’s also free to start, so you can try it yourself and see whether you like it or not. For whatever it’s worth, it seems to be a solid enough take on the genre. Naturally while it is free to start there are going to be microtransactions a-plenty on offer, which you can indulge in or ignore at your leisure. It supports cross-platform play with the mobile versions, so there should always be a healthy population ready to battle with you.

Arcade Archives Vendetta ($7.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

It’s a bit early this week due to the four-day weekend here in Japan, but this week’s Arcade Archives release is a really nice one. Konami’s 1991 beat-em-up Vendetta is the game in question, the considerably better sequel to Crime Fighters. Choose one of four characters and battle to save someone, probably, by bashing in every face and hoofing every groin you see. As far as Konami’s non-licensed beat-em-ups go, this isn’t the top but it sure isn’t that far down the ladder. Hamster has done its usual fine job in bringing the game to the platform, and I’m writing this usual fine sentence to remind you of that.

Fatal Twelve ($39.99)

This is a very well-written visual novel about a young woman who finds herself swept up in a game where her very life is on the line. If she wins, she’ll be able to undo her untimely demise, but among the other participants is her good friend. How and why did she die? And can our heroine really grab her chance for life knowing what it will cost? I really enjoyed this one, so I feel comfortable recommending it to fans of the genre. The only issue is that it costs twice as much on Switch as it does on Steam, and I really can’t figure out why. If you don’t mind paying a premium to have it on your Switch, it’s a really great story to dig into.

MouseBot: Escape from CatLab ($4.99)

So this is a 3D obstacle course game of sorts. Your MouseBot zips forward and you need to steer and jump it around and over the various hazards that lay in your path. There are 88 levels in total to play through, which is quite respectable for the price. Grab pieces of cheese along the way and trade it for customization items to deck out your MouseBot with. This actually seems surprisingly decent if you’re not opposed to the basic concept. I could think of lots of worse ways to blow a fiver.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

There’s good news in today’s discounts for fans of Touhou and fans of karaoke. Not fans of Touhou and karaoke though. Those streams surprisingly have yet to cross. I’ll also call attention to The Darkside Detective and its sequel, which are a pair of well-made adventure games. Oh, and Spinch. Spinch is weird and cool. In the outbox, there are some good Ubisoft games, the Resident Evil games, and assorted other indies and such. Check those lists as you always do, friends.
