SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’ Announced, Plus ‘Induction’ and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for July 14th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a couple of cool news items to check out. The next Smash event features a surprising theme, and a nifty Smash-like was announced. Smashy news, I guess. There are a handful of new releases to check out, with one really cool new puzzler and a decent twin-stick shooter in the line-up. Finally, we’ve got the usual lists of new and expiring sales for you to consider. A lot more of the latter than the former, but that’s how things go sometimes. Let’s have a look and see what’s in the box!

‘Smash’-Like ‘Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’ Announced for Switch

Love Super Smash Bros. Ultimate but tired of its characters? Maybe you wish instead of anime boys with swords there were cartoon reptiles with nunchucks? Game Mill might have what you’re looking for in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, a pretty obvious take on Nintendo’s mascot bash-em-up. While the full roster hasn’t been announced, the announcement trailer certainly shows off enough characters from enough franchises to get at least a little excited. Ninja Turtles! Rugrats! Hey Arnold! Ren & Stimpy! The Wild Thornberries! SpongeBob SquarePants! Invader Zim! The Loud House! Danny Phantom! Aaahh Real Monsters! You can play as Reptar! Now, on the one hand, Game Mill isn’t exactly in the business of making AAA games. On the other hand, Ludosity of Ittle Dew and Slap City fame is developing this. So yeah… I’m cautiously optimistic. Like, it apparently has rollback netcode? Way to do what even Tekken and Virtua Fighter don’t, Nickelodeon. Anyway, it’s coming this fall to Switch and other platforms, at which point we’ll see if it has what it takes to play in the big leagues.

‘Sakuna: Of Rice & Ruin’ Features in Next ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Event

It’s looking like a bit of a special one for the next weekend event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Three new spirits will be joining the game, drawn from the surprise hit Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin. It’s a great game. If you haven’t played it, you really should. Anyway, the three new spirits can be earned by playing the event, which kicks off on Friday and runs for five days instead of the usual three. On a related note, event-exclusive spirits from the Monster Hunter and Super Mario 3D World events have been added to the regular rotation.

New Releases

Induction ($8.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

A quirky minimalistic puzzle game with a time travel gimmick, Induction gives you a bit over fifty stages to chew on. You’ll need to take advantage of time paradoxes and time loops to solve the challenges found in the game. It’s genuinely clever and tricky, but the feeling of satisfaction from figuring out what you need to do in each stage is superb. It is quite tough, though. Don’t come into this expecting a relaxing time, no matter how much the presentation tries to build that atmosphere. I think it’s pretty nifty, but let’s be real: I would.

Curved Space ($19.99)

This is a slick-looking twin-stick shooter whose main gimmick comes from its, well, curved spaces that you do battle in. You’ll move up, around, and over these odd shapes, battling creepy crawlers with an assortment of weapons. There are a variety of modes, including a campaign, survival, endless, and even a daily challenge. I’ve played a bit of this one so far and will be doing a review of it, and it’s not too shabby. Not sure if it’s “twenty dollars" good, but time will tell.

ASMR Journey – Jigsaw Puzzle ($3.99)

I don’t really know what’s specifically ASMR about this latest release from QUByte, as it just seems to be a normal jigsaw puzzle game with a chill theme to me. There’s a story mode, oddly enough. You get a bit of story, you do a puzzle, you get a bit more story, and so on. The game supports button and touch controls, with the latter being a lot more comfortable to use. You also have access to a few helpful features that show you the border pieces, shuffle the remaining pieces, and show what the completed picture should look like. Each puzzle can be played at various levels of difficulty, allowing you to choose how many pieces you want the picture to be broken up into. Not sure what more to say here. Jigsaw puzzles: you know how they work.

3D Air Hockey ($4.99)

Pix Arts has rolled up another cheap, low-effort release for us all to point and gawk at today. This time it’s an air hockey game for up to two players via local multiplayer. Naturally, since it’s just an Android template that Pix Arts bought from the Unity Asset Store, it has no support for button controls. You’ll have to rock this one in handheld. Anyway, you get two different angles to play from, three AI levels if you choose to play in single-player, and a small selection of tables and mallets (is that what they’re called?) to choose from for a bit of customization. It also touts a “Real Physic Engine", so please look forward to its physic. It only has the one. Hopefully it goes far.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Well, I just can’t get excited by that list of new sales at all. what could a person buy from there that they didn’t already own? I guess Danmaku Unlimited 3? Very good shoot-em-up if you haven’t picked it up yet. The outbox is a lot beefier, and I would say that you should at least consider some of the titles from Circle Entertainment like Mercenaries Wings and Shadows of Adam. Circle does sales somewhat often, but specific titles in its catalog sometimes go several months between discounts. Well, do that usual thing and comb through those lists yourself to be sure.
