Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for June 21st, 2021. As we enter the back end of June, we’re heading into a strangely busy period for new releases. There are a few new games today, and a couple are worth noting. Later this week, we’ll see the Alex Kidd remake, Mario Golf, Legend of Mana, LEGO Builder’s Journey, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and many more. As for today, Mikhail’s got a review of recent release Umurangi Generation, and we’ve also got lists of the incoming and wild amount of outgoing sales. Let’s go!
Reviews & Mini-Views
Umurangi Generation ($24.99)
At the end of 2020 when I finished writing up my personal top games of the year, I spent a few days looking at other people’s lists to see what I missed in what was a very busy year for game releases. I noticed a game called Umurangi Generation on a few lists and decided to look into it. Having then bought it on PC but not played it yet, it went into the backlog as with most things. The new Nintendo Switch release felt like a good time to check this game out since it includes the base game and the Macro DLC as Umurangi Generation Special Edition.
Umurangi Generation is a first person photography game where you spend time in sandbox levels and try to complete bounties and bonus objectives. It is set in a retro styled future and is one of the most chilled out games I’ve played in recent years. Umurangi Generation Special Edition on Nintendo Switch includes quality of life updates to the PC version and the Macro DLC in a single package.
While the screenshots are very striking and are enough to sell most people on Umurangi Generation, the full game has gotten its hooks in me like Hitman did back when IO Interactive used to release individual locations as episodes. Umurangi Generation‘s gameplay gives you a ton of freedom to accomplish each level’s bounties but it also has a nice sense of progression.
You unlock new equipment and can revisit older levels to maybe complete bonus objectives or just take that photo you always wanted to but lacked the equipment for. There’s also an interesting narrative going on through the sandbox levels that is worth seeing play out all the way through various posters, in-game ads, and general signage. Exploring is always worth it not just for bonus objectives but also to learn more about the overarching story. Even though it already got DLC (that is included in the Switch version from the start), I hope we get more of this world in the future.
On Nintendo Switch, Umurangi Generation includes gyro support which works really well. I used it a lot on Nintendo Switch Lite. The other Nintendo Switch-specific addition is touchscreen support for the menus and interface. I love it when games add that. The final aspect I want to highlight is the icon. I know Switch icons are a meme to some but Umurangi Generation‘s icon is gorgeous and I hope an eventual physical release has box art this nice.
Having now played it on both PC and Nintendo Switch, the Switch port gets the job done but the performance and image quality might be a bit too erratic for those who are sensitive to these things. The biggest downgrade for me is the resolution and draw distance. The combination of both makes certain objectives harder because the stylized aesthetic doesn’t scale too well for smaller objects and text. Overall, it looks good on Nintendo Switch but I’m hoping future patches can address some of these issues. The first big patch since launch addresses some of the visual and collision issues but it still isn’t as good as I had hoped. Umurangi Generation feels right at home on Nintendo Switch and the gyro really elevates the experience.
Ever since I booted up the game on Nintendo Switch, I’ve been listening to the soundtrack while working every day. Umurangi Generation is one of the few games in recent years to have a soundtrack that perfectly complements the visuals and chilled out gameplay loop. The last time I felt so engrossed in those aspects of a game together was VA-11 Hall-A which is one of my favorite games of all time.
Overall, Umurangi Generation on Nintendo Switch is one of the biggest surprises in recent years for me. I definitely regret not playing it sooner on PC. If you enjoy sandbox style games with lots of replayability, photo modes, and photography, this is the game for you. It is best played on PC thanks to the technical issues but I’d be lying if I said this isn’t one of my favorite games of 2021 on Nintendo Switch. Hopefully it does well enough to get a physical release. -Mikhail Madnani

New Releases
Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights ($24.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
Wow, a high-quality Monday release! That doesn’t happen terribly often, but let’s enjoy it. Ender Lilies is a Metroidvania game that draws inspiration from the Souls games, a combination we see with surprising frequency. You know the deal: a dark and foreboding atmosphere, challenging boss battles, tricky timing-based combat. Ender Lilies has all of those things, though it’s not quite as tough as some entries in this category. Indeed, the feel of it hovers between Hollow Knight and Symphony of the Night, and while I wouldn’t push it up to the levels of those games, it could probably attend their birthday parties without being tossed out. It sure doesn’t hurt that it looks gorgeous, either.
Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game ($39.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
Right, this is still a thing. This game was actually released in Japan more than a year ago in anticipation of the 2020 games, but those got pushed back and so did this title’s international release. The Olympics are happening soon, whether they ought to or not, and so this game can finally come out everywhere. It’s the usual Olympics-style game, with 18 different events to play either alone or with up to eight players in online and local multiplayer. Hammer those buttons. Time those button pushes. This stuff never really changes, and if you’ve played the Sonic & Mario game released a while back you probably know how this one goes for many of its events. This game is taking a more realistic approach, but it’s also not afraid to be silly. You get all kinds of weird costume options that make the normally mundane stylings of, say, the 100m dash look absolutely hilarious. And yes, Sonic is here.
Wood Block Escape Puzzles 2 ($5.99)
Benjamin Kistler is back with his latest “creation" that was likely bought from the Unity Asset Store. It’s another one of those escape puzzles where you need to shift the wood blocks to make a route for the targeted piece to escape its confines. Like the first game, it’s handheld only as it requires you to use touch controls to play. Too much work to add button controls to that template Android APK I guess. You get a healthy number of puzzles to solve here, grouped into different difficulty levels each with dozens of levels to clear. If you enjoy these puzzles and you’ve already tapped all the free ones on the App Store, I’ll at least grant that this isn’t expensive.
Aquatic Rampage ($9.99)
I feel like most of the, er, low-effort stuff on the eShop hits demographics that are already served by at least one or two better games, even at the same price. But I can’t imagine any greater show of chutzpah than putting out a crappy shoot-em-up on the eShop for a whole ten dollars. That’s putting yourself above every Arcade Archives game along with at least a dozen well-made indie shooters. I’m sure someone buys these things or publishers like this one wouldn’t keep coming back, but still. Look at that screen shot. You could buy Rangerdog or Life Force instead and still have money in your pocket for snacks.
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
The big sale is ending soon, so it’s time to figure out your final purchases and cash out. Nintendo’s first party titles, and in particular their DLC, should be a priority on the basis that they don’t go on sale often. That said, even if you’re not all that into the house that Mario built, there’s still a lot to think about. The inbox doesn’t have much to offer by comparison. A few new games, a few familiar faces, and some other stuff that doesn’t go on sale that often but also isn’t terribly exciting. Happy hunting!
