SwitchArcade Round-Up: E3 Highlights, ‘Mushihimesama’ and Today’s New Releases, Plus a Massive List of Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for June 16th, 2021. In today’s big-pants article, we’ve got a bit of news to go through. Not the least of which being what was shown in that scorching hot E3 presentation. A new 2D Metroid! They brought my baby back! After the news, we have some new releases to check out including a couple of surprise drops. And then… there are some sales. Not all the sales. Not enough hours in a day. But I have a bunch of them for you. The best of them? You decide. Let’s go!

Nintendo E3 Highlights Include ‘Metroid Dread’, ‘Advance Wars’, and More

Wow, that was quite a show, wasn’t it? There was an awful lot in Nintendo’s E3 2021 Direct, with plenty of unexpected surprises. Metroid Dread, a new 2D Metroid, will be taking point in October. WarioWare is back in Get It Together!, due in September. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp remakes the classic Game Boy Advance strategy games and is due in December. Mario Party Superstars gives you some multiplayer joy at the end of October. All that, plus third party titles like Super Monkey Ball Bananamania, Shin Megami Tensei V, a trio of Life is Strange releases, Danganronpa, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and Koei Tecmo’s Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water. There’s more than those, too. Give the video a watch if you haven’t yet, it’s quite good.

‘Tetris 99’ Meets ‘Miitopia’ in the Next Maximus Cup

It’s been a while since Tetris 99 had its last event, but it looks like this weekend will end that vacation. Nintendo’s recent release Miitopia takes the center stage in this Maximus Cup, and as usual there’s a special theme and music to go with it. If you manage to earn 100 points before the event is up, you’ll get to keep the theme. The event starts on Friday and will run through the weekend, hopefully giving you plenty of time to earn your goodies.

Celebrate Father’s Day in ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ This Weekend

With the news that “Best Dad" Kazuya Mishima will be joining the roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it’s clear that June is all about the paternal appreciation in this game. As such, the next weekend event will be celebrating papas and daddoos in a special Spirit Board challenge. Characters who are fathers will appear more than usual, and if you beat them up you’ll get more SP. Ah, nature is cruel. Also, whoever picked the characters for this event’s key art? Wow, you really went for it. Anyway, the event begins on Friday and runs for the usual three days through the weekend.

New Releases

Mushihimesama ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

There were a lot of surprises in the Nintendo Direct, but one that only appeared in the Japanese version of the broadcast was that a trio of Cave games would be coming to Switch from Live Wire, a developer with several former Cave employees in its number. One of the three announced titles actually hit the shop today: Mushihimesama. It’s a vertical-scrolling bullet hell shoot-em-up in the cookin’ Cave manner, with white-knuckle action and some of the most ridiculous curtains of bullets you’ll ever see in a game. There are lots of options in here, but if you’ve played the PC port of the game you’ll largely know what to expect. I’ll be reviewing this game, but it’s not like you need me to tell you that Mushihimesama is ridiculously awesome. Oh, and don’t worry, you can turn that filter off.

Strange Brigade ($34.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Rebellion’s cooperative multiplayer third-person shooter makes its way to the Switch in a similar manner to its previous titles. Take control of one of a troop of heroes as they do battle against the Witch Queen Seteki and her strange brigade of mummified monsters. Up to four players can join together via local wireless or online to tackle the army of evil. Deadly traps and puzzles await you as you make your way through the game’s 1930s-inspired world. If you’ve got like-minded people to play it with, this game is quite enjoyable. It feels a bit like Zombie Army Trilogy meets Left 4 Dead with a coat of pulpy paint.

Plastic Rebellion ($7.99)

A tower defense game with a toy theme, Plastic Rebellion has a promising set-up but ultimately fails in its execution. First of all, I’ll give kudos to leaning into the whole toy warfare thing. The battle areas aren’t the most detailed but they are colorful and pop nicely. The gameplay unfortunately is bog-standard at best. At worst? Well, let’s just say that this game often feels like it has big ambitions but can’t pull them off. Probably best to give it a pass unless you are really into the concept to the point that you’ll forgive a large list of flaws.

Together ($6.99)

This is a platformer meant to be played with a friend. You have two characters who are bound together and need to make their way through various levels to bring color back to the world. If they’re separated, they have just five seconds to reconnect. You’ll unlock new characters as you go, and they all have their own abilities to bring to the adventure. It seems very “five dollar 2D platformer" which is only a problem in that it is a little more than five dollars. I’m going to give this a go and if I have any feelings about it I’ll write a little review.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Okay, we’ve been through this sort of thing a few times before. Nintendo posted a massive sale yesterday with literally hundreds upon hundreds of games in it. I’m not going to list them all, or even most of them. I’ll put a fair sized selection here, and if you want more you can either head over to Nintendo’s website or to the eShop on your Switch. Whatever game you’re interested, the odds are reasonably good it’s on sale. Check those wishlists and also check the DLC for any games on sale as odds are good it is discounted as well. Finally, take a look at the rather large outbox while you’re at it.

That’s all for today, friends. Wow, that was probably the busiest day of the week and it’s not even Thursday yet. That would be tomorrow, when we’ll see a bunch of new releases. I’m too tired to check what they are, but rest assured they do exist. We’ll have summaries of all of them of course, along with whatever sales come along. Probably no news, but who knows. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
