SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Solas 128’, ‘Seal Electric Railway’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 25th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got several new releases to check out. Some very odd ones, if I can be direct about it. There are summaries of all of them, of course. Such is the work. We’ve also got the lists of new and outgoing sales for you to check out, and that’s about it. Reviews are coming tomorrow, friends, I promise. Let’s slide on in and check things out!

New Releases

Solas 128 ($14.99)

A puzzle game of the sort where you’re positioning mirrors to reflect beams. There’s an added color element in this game to give it a bit more crunch. You might have to combine beams to create new colors in order to beat some of the screens. There are a few other interesting elements to help this stand out from similar titles, and you get a good 150 screens worth of interlocked puzzles, with the ultimate goal being to get a machine up and running again. It’s rather good if you enjoy this type of puzzle, but if you can’t get on with them it likely won’t win you over even with all of its extra tricks.

The Unexpected Quest ($15.00)

This is a rather poor light strategy game, one that will make you appreciate the likes of Gnomes Garden. You manage building structures, battling monsters, and gathering resources as you complete a rather small number of stages. The controls feel like they were designed for a mouse interface, and I’m pretty sure they were. Not a very enjoyable game at all, and the fact that it costs a fair bit for what it is sure doesn’t make the situation better.

Shark Copter Vs. Zombie Dancers ($3.85)

A wild Now Production game appears, and I don’t have the first idea what to make of it. You play as the titular Shark Copter, a flying shark that can stretch its neck and eat zombies without being infected. You have to eat enough zombies to clear the quota and exceed it if you can before time expires. By the looks of it, there’s only one stage setting. Don’t expect this to last that long or provide you with any kind of deep gameplay, but it’s certainly weird enough that it could scratch the itch of a particular type of player.

Seal Electric Railway ($3.85)

Oh wait, there are two Now Production games today? Well, sure. You’re a train driver. A seal train driver, driving a seal train filled with seal passengers. Your job is to drive the train safely to the next station, a job made much more difficult by the presence of hungry orcas. You have to tilt the Joy-Con back and forth to keep the train balanced as all manner of calamities occur. There are forty stages in total split between single player and multiplayer, with the latter being a local mode for two players. Cute, silly fun for a reasonable price. The appeal burns away pretty quickly, though.

Spaceship Curse ($3.85)

Three? Three Now Production games? What is this, the Famicom? As you might expect from the previous two games we just looked at, Spaceship Curse is an oddball. An astronaut takes a cursed Japanese doll into space, and she turns his friends into dolls, and now the astronaut needs to figure out how to break the curse before it’s too late. Kind of a puzzle/adventure game, and not a particularly great one. If nothing else, it’s something different.

Legend of Numbers ($2.99)

This is a cheap match-3 game that seems like it will be something different at first glance but turns out to be quite ordinary. Match numbers, make special pieces, and clear the stages under the set conditions. There are the usual power-ups and you do get gobs of stages to play, so I suppose if you’re okay with a bare-bones take on the genre you’ll likely get your three dollars’ worth out of this. Personally I’m okay sticking with the several billion free-to-play mobile takes on the concept.

Redout: Space Assault ($9.99)

This is a space-themed rail shooter that originally hit Apple Arcade about a year ago. It’s… okay, but not great. There’s a career mode with lots of missions to complete, and you’ll get upgrades and cool new weapons as you go along. It’s a bit of a looker considering the price, but that’s probably the best thing it has going for it. There’s just something about the way the ship controls work that just don’t do it for me. Don’t take this to mean that the game is bad. It’s more average than anything. But this is a case where I think you’re far better off experiencing what it has to offer via an Apple Arcade subscription.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

A rather big list, though not a terribly exciting one. Still, there are some interesting titles in there like Treachery in Beatdown City, 2westein, and Coffee Crisis. Enough that you’ll want to check through the list just to see what is sitting between the usual suspects. Nothing worth getting too pumped up over in the outbox either. That’s how it is sometimes, friends.
