Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 21st, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a ton of new releases to look at. There are even a few really good games today, which is a break from recent patterns. That’s a good thing, because there’s next to nothing going in terms of new sales. The New Year’s Sale is winding down, however, and we’ve got a giant list of outgoing sales that you really should check out before it’s too late. Let’s head on in!
New Releases
Tadpole Treble Encore ($8.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
Wow, this is kind of great. This game was originally released on home computers a few years back to critical acclaim and a whole lot of praise, and it only takes a few minutes of playing with it to see why. It’s an incredibly charming rhythm game with a fun story and an excellent mode where you can compose your own pieces. The built-in soundtrack is fantastic, and the gameplay, which sees you moving your character along musical staves, is just plain enjoyable. This Encore version adds a new stage and some new unlockables on top of the already solid base. All this for nine bucks? Super. I’ll be doing a review of this next week sometime, so keep your eyes peeled.
Hitman 3 – Cloud Version (Free Trial)

I… can’t imagine that the Nintendo Switch is anyone’s first choice for playing Hitman 3, but if it’s all you’ve got or you have a stable internet connection you can rely on, this will let you play the game in all its glory. The Trial Version only lets you play for a few minutes, really just as a way to test if your connection is good enough. After that, you’ll have to spring for the Access Pass to play the rest of the game. Since the other Hitman games have no Switch versions, there’s no free way to get access to that additional content, but you can buy it. Well, it’s up to you. Just keep in mind that this is more of a long-term rental than a purchase as we’d normally consider it.

Let me tell you, as someone who teaches English for a living, idioms that you take for granted in your own language can become bizarre nonsense when you look at them from outside the language. This clever little game uses that as a means of delivering a rather fresh puzzle experience. Each stage presents you with a picture, and you need to interact with objects to somehow create a well-known English idiom. So for example, a guy who wants to impress a girl ultimately needs you to put the girl in front of a high-powered fan, which sends her flying out of the frame. She was blown away, you see. I really like this game, and if you enjoy a bit of language foolishness I think you will too.
Missile Dancer ($9.99)

Missile Dancer has been out in Japan for a bit. I picked it up back when it first hit the Switch here and have played it quite a bit already as a result. This comes from developer Terarin, who makes some really high-quality indie shoot-em-ups. And that’s just what you get here. It’s a vertical shooter where you need to avoid enemy missiles and lock on to the baddies to return fire with your own. Defeated enemies will drop items that increase the range of your lock-on capability, allowing you to take out more in one go. There’s a standard arcade mode where you battle your way through the stages, and a three-minute score attack “Caravan" mode. You can even have a second player join in via local multiplayer for more missiles and more fun.
Sally Face ($14.99)

Sally Face, the game, is as odd and difficult to categorize as its titular main character. It’s mainly an adventure game, but it diverges from that kind of gameplay often and significantly enough that I don’t know that I’d want to call it that. Let’s instead say that it’s a journey into the disturbed mind and memories of a strange character, one that feels like it’s pulling you down into its madness the further you go. There’s a lot to like in Sally Face, and some stuff that might be repulsive to people, but other than a slightly wobbly ending I found the whole thing rather fascinating. I’ve never played a game quite like Sally Face, and I don’t expect to ever again.
Arcade Archives Block Hole ($7.99)
Well, that’s a localized name that I didn’t know before today. This is Konami’s 1989 shooter/puzzle game hybrid Quarth. Different shapes come down the screen, and you have to shoot them to fill in the gaps and make squares and rectangles. The completed shapes will be removed from the screen, but if any of them touch the bottom you’re toast. I’m reasonably sure that most Western players would know this game from its Game Boy port if they know it at all. It’s an okay game but there’s just a bit of special sauce missing that keeps it from being truly great, in my opinion. Hamster’s done its usual work here, so it’s just as anyone who actually saw Block Hole in the arcades would remember.
Frodoric the Driver ($4.99)
The eShop description describes this as a “retro style arcade game", but I disagree. If it calls any classic era to mind, it’s probably the days of Flash games. Your character is out of smokes and needs to drive to the nearest shop, which is not very near at all. Getting there will require you to make your way through tons of locations and areas in a top-down driving game. You can earn extra points by smashing into other cars, pick up weapons to help you break through obstacles, earn new vehicles, and do a lot of other things that seem odd for a cig run. Well, that’s the game. Seems to have been pretty popular on Android, but it’s also free there.
Jiffy ($2.00)
A very cheap little platformer. It has 44 levels and 5 boss battles. There’s an endless mode that uses procedural generation to create an infinite scroll of plain platforming. You also get a battle mode where you’re locked in a room with an endless supply of enemies. Or are they locked in with you? No, you’re the one that will die, after all. Not very exciting or fancy, but for a couple of bucks there are definitely worse games in this genre you could pick up on the eShop.
Shing! ($19.99)
Shing! is a humorous beat-em-up with an unusual control scheme, and how well you like it is largely going to come down to how well you get on with that set-up. Rather than hammering away at attack buttons, you bust out your attacks using the right stick. It’s not entirely unheard of in the genre, but it’s certainly a rare sight. If you can get into bashing bad guys with the flick of a stick, you’ll find this to be a perfectly serviceable brawler. I don’t begrudge anyone who can’t, as this genre is particularly likely to appeal to people that connect the smack of a button with a punch to the face. Up to four players can join in via local multiplayer, but there’s no online play.
Loot Hero DX ($4.99)
Well, that’s clearly just Drancia, or Slayin’ if you want to go with the really popular take on the idea. But not quite, either. There’s a fair bit of nuance missing from the gameplay here, which borders on automatic. Just charge into the enemies, level up, use the resources you collect to buy upgrades, and keep on charging forward until you’re strong enough to kill the dragon. Then do it again. And again. This is a fair bit cheaper than Slayin’ 2 but the extra cost is worth it if you’re looking for something along these lines. This game just feels kind of empty.
Ephemeral – Fantasy on Dark ($37.99)
I believe we are now at the point where I can post a screenshot like the above and you will immediately know what kind of game this is without much explanation. In this otome visual novel, you follow the story of a cute zombie lady named Cloe who leaves her zombie town to attend a fancy academy where mummies, vampires, invisible men, and werewolves are among the students. And wouldn’t you know it? There’s a handsome hunk of each type who will become interested in our zombie heroine. And they also fit into the classic otome love interest stereotypes! What luck! Some good art in this one, and the story is fine for what it is.
Ghostanoid ($6.99)
Sure are a lot of brick-breakers using some portion of Arkanoid‘s name hitting the Switch lately. This is another one. The idea behind this one is that you have to clean the rooms of the mansion, which involves hitting all of the ghosts or bricks with your ball. There are lots of gimmicks to add some spice to the endeavor, but at the end of the day this is a fairly straightforward brick-breaker with a decent bit of polish to it. It’s not going to convince anyone that isn’t already interested in this kind of thing, but for those who can’t get enough of smacking balls with paddles the price here is fair for what you get.
Unspottable ($11.99)
This is a party game for up to four players, local multiplayer only. The idea here is that everyone plays as a character that looks identical to the AI robots walking around, and you need to identify the other players and sock them one to knock them out. You don’t want to do anything to give away your position, so it’s important to not be too hasty with the punching. Even figuring out which character is yours at the start of a round carries some risk. Punch an AI robot and you’ll be stunned long enough for another player to do you in. There are a variety of stages, and some of them have secondary objectives, but nothing too game-changing. Note that there is no single-player content here whatsoever. You can’t even start the game without another player. It’s okay, but there are better party bangs for your party buck on the Switch.
Air Bounce – The Jump ‘n’ Run Challenge ($5.99)
This is a first-person 3D runner/platformer that sees you making precise jumps through nine different worlds, each with five stages. It’s a bit demanding in terms of precision but that’s how some platformers are, I suppose. There are a few hidden secrets to find but for the most part this is a pretty linear experience. The price is reasonable enough, but I’d personally pocket that six bucks towards a Super Mario 3D World purchase if you really want to get your platforming kicks.
Nosferatu Lilinor ($17.14)
Sigh, what is with that price? That’s going to be a headache for future sales. Oh well. This is a cute action-puzzle game where you need to use the main character’s many abilities to navigate stages and reach the goal. A second player can join in via local multiplayer, and playing this way really does bring back memories of vintage arcade games. It’s actually a pretty fun game, but it feels a little expensive for what you get from it. Oh, and it’s ridiculously tough. Hopefully that’s implied by my comparison to classic arcade games, but I’m saying it clearly just to be safe.
Bouncing Hero ($4.99)
This looks a lot like a mobile game conversion but I’m not going to chase it down to find out. I say that because this is a platformer that for some reason is only using the middle slice of the Switch’s screen. You play as a knight on a pogo stick, so you’re always bouncing. You’ve seen this kind of thing before, I’m sure. You have to navigate through a castle that is procedurally-generated, ensuring a new experience every time you play. Of course, that also means the stages aren’t properly hand-designed, and that usually isn’t good news for a platformer. Well, that’s what it is. It’s not terrible. Do what you will with it.
Chess Royal ($2.99)
This is a very simple chess game, one whose price matches its content well. You can play against another player via local multiplayer, or you can go against the computer at a variety of difficulty levels. There’s also a Puzzle Tower mode where you need to solve a number of chess puzzles. The presentation is rather spartan, but I suppose that kind of glitter isn’t really needed if you just want to have a quick game of chess. An online multiplayer mode would have been nice, but for three bucks I’m not sure how fair it would be to expect features like that.
Grisaia Phantom Trigger 5.5 ($14.99)
You might have been expecting the next game in the Grisaia Phantom Trigger series to be Grisaia Phantom Trigger 06, but no. We’re going for a half-step here. Like all of the other games in this series, it’s a visual novel focused on a bunch of students at Mihama Academy. Standing at the center of this story is teacher Arisaka Shiori, who finds herself at a bit of a crossroads. Will she stay or will she go? And what is her tragic past? No choices here, just settle in for an interesting story about one of the side characters in this successful series.
Bezier: Second Edition ($19.99)
Bezier is a twin-stick shooter in the vein of things like Geometry Wars or, I don’t know, Death Ray Manta. It has some solid mechanics, an interesting visual presentation, a solid soundtrack, and a weird story to help it stand out from the crowd. It sort of works. I don’t think Bezier is going to amuse anyone who isn’t already into this genre as it is quite challenging and a bit overwhelming from a sensory standpoint, but if you like twin-stick shooters you’ll want to check this out, especially at its launch sale price.

Well, that’s an unbalanced scale, isn’t it? I’m sure by the time you read this there will be more new sales posted, but at the time of writing this is all we have. So instead, turn your attention to the outbox. The New Year’s sale is finishing up tomorrow, and there’s an awful lot of good stuff in that list to consider before it does. The first-party Nintendo titles in particular, like Captain Toad, ARMS, and Splatoon 2, are unlikely to go on sale again for a while.
