Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 15th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a bunch of new releases to check out, with summaries of each of them. There are a couple of awesome news items to look over, and a gigantic New Year’s Sale that is so big I had to resort to curation. Yikes. There’s plenty to chew on today, so let us commence with the chewing!

‘New Pokemon Snap’ Gets New Trailer, Releases April 30th
People have been asking for a new Pokemon Snap game for ages, and The Pokemon Company is finally set to deliver exactly that. A new trailer was released showing off the new game, and we even got a release date: April 30th. It looks pretty good, with lots of beautiful sights and a wide variety of creatures to snap pictures of. Here’s hoping it’s a little more substantial than the original game, though. I remember that one being over and done with in only a few hours. Sure, there’s only so long you can stretch out what is basically an on-rails shooter, but if we’re only getting one of these every twenty years or so, I want to savor the flavor.
‘Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night’ Gets a Cool New Update
While the game didn’t launch on the Switch in the best of shape, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has enjoyed some excellent updates since then. Here’s the latest, which adds some cross-over content with Kingdom: Two Crowns along with a whole new mode that will feel very familiar to Castlevania fans. Classic Mode gives you a more straightforward action experience, echoing the linear and more deliberate gameplay of titles like Rondo of Blood or Castlevania Chronicles. I haven’t spent too much time with it yet, but from what little I’ve played it certainly feels right. This update is free, so go download it and enjoy.
New Releases
Writhe ($9.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
I kind of dig what this game is doing. It’s a first-person shooter, but its structure is more like one of those twin-stick shooters where you have to try to survive as long as you can before eventually succumbing to the increasingly dangerous packs of enemies. There are a few different environments to play in, and it’s really quite satisfying to try to beat your best times again and again. There are some unlockables you can get by accumulating enough kills over time, adding a mild meta to the blasting action. Probably not for everyone, but those who appreciate a good pick-up-and-play score attack will find some pleasing thrills here.
My Magic Florist ($6.99)
While that title calls all kinds of possible games to my imagination, the reality is sadly quite mundane. This is, in essence, one of those time management food-serving games. Just, you know, substitute the food orders for flower orders. Serve the customers what they want before they become impatient, and use your earnings to upgrade your shop. I suppose I can at least give it credit for finding a creative way to repackage the same old game again. If you dig all those food-serving games that Baltoro in particular fires out at a regular pace, this may be to your liking.
Solar Blast ($4.99)
Another middling release from our friends at Ultimate Games. In this one, you need to protect the sun in the middle from incoming attacks by using a shield. The shield is moved by rotating the stick, and while it starts off pretty slow things heat up quickly. There are some power-ups that appear every now and then to spice things up. You can play this game on your mobile device for free to see how well you like it before considering whether or not to drop a fiver on the Switch version. It’s alright, but it got old for me pretty quickly. Give it a go and see if you feel differently.
Curling ($5.99)
Pix Arts just had to get one more lick in before the end of the week, didn’t it? Of course it would have to be a video game version of one of my home country’s most treasured of activities, too. Anyway, this is a shoddy and rather threadbare curling game, with the one saving grace being that the developer actually implemented a two-player mode here. Local only, mind you. But it’s something. You can also play against the computer at three different difficulty levels. It’s quite terrible, and while it only costs six bucks I have to believe you can find better ways to use that money.
G-MODE Archives25 Topolon ($4.99)
Okay, so to explain that title. In Japan, G-MODE has been releasing ports of its classic cell phone games (and indeed most of them predate smartphones) on the Switch, sometimes with extra modes and features but for the most part trying to deliver a faithful experience. Since the bulk of those games were never available outside of Japan and tend to be text-heavy, we haven’t seen any of them in the Western eShops up until now. Topolon actually had a bit of presence outside of Japan and its intense puzzle action doesn’t really need a lot of localization, so this was chosen as the debut for the series in the West. It’s a pretty good puzzle game, but personally I wish these ports weren’t quite so… accurate to the originals in some ways. Anyway, if you played this back in 2005 or whatever and have been pining for it, here’s your chance.
Silver Screen Story ($14.00)
No new movies? Just make your own! This is the latest from Kairosoft, and it is very much in the mold of Game Dev Story. Just switch out games for movies and you’re four-fifths of the way there. Hire the right staff, train them up, pick the genres and stars, and try to make box office smash hits. If you liked Game Dev Story and haven’t completely burnt out on Kairosoft sims yet, you’ll probably have a lot of fun here. Worth mentioning that this is also available on mobile platforms for about half the price, and it plays perfectly on those devices. It’s up to you if you want to pay the Switch tax for very little benefit.
Medulla ($9.99)
This atmospheric puzzle-platformer released on mobile and home computers a little while ago and has now arrived on Switch. It’s alright as this sort of thing goes, though I don’t think it really does much to distinguish itself from what is slowly becoming quite a crowded pack. The art style is quite interesting, and I suppose some of the puzzles are at least different from the kinds we tend to see in games like these. I’m not sure if they’re different in a good or bad way, but at least it’s something new. If you enjoy this genre you’ll probably feel good enough about spending money and time on this one.
Arcade Archives Cosmo Police Galivan ($7.99)
This game was originally released in 1985 by Nichibutsu, and like most of their games the idea is a lot better than the execution. It’s inspired by Japanese hero shows, and features a character who can power-up a couple of stages to get cool armor and a sword. You battle your way through side-scrolling stages, and it’s just kind of messy and awkward to play. Hamster has done its usual good job with bringing it to the Switch, with all the usual options and extras. Personally I don’t think it’s very good at all, but if you’ve got the nostalgia itch, Hamster’s got your scratch.
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
I sure did not expect this kind of sale when I rest my gentle head to the pillow last night. But here we are today and several hundred games went on sale as some sort of New Year’s deal. I can’t transcribe everything, so I decided to just hit the highlights. But even the highlights kept on going and going, so if you don’t see something here make sure you check the eShop to see if it’s on sale. It might be! Not too much of note in the outbox, but you might as well look at that too while you’re at it.
