Originally released as a PlayStation 4 exclusive back in August of 2019, London-based developer Flavourworks has announced via Twitter that their interactive full-motion video thriller Erica will be making its way to iOS in some form this coming Friday. Full-motion video games or FMV games have made a comeback in a big way in recent years, and in the case of Erica its unique mechanic that set it apart from similar games was something Flavourworks called “Touch Video" technology, which included special sequences in the game where you could directly interact with and control a full-motion video sequence. On the PS4 this was mapped to the controller’s inputs, but you could also download the Erica Companion App to your mobile device and interact with those special scenes directly on the touchscreen. You can see these special sequences, as well as the overall vibe of Erica, in the game’s original launch trailer below followed by a short but very interesting behind-the-scenes video which goes into more detail about how they created the game’s world and unique touch interactions.
Given this special attention to virtually touching so many parts of the game world in Erica, and given that you could already do so on the PS4 via your iOS or Android device, it makes a lot of sense that the game itself would make its way to mobile. However, Flavourworks is a bit vague in the wording of their tweet, saying they’ve been “working hard to create an incredible touch screen experience for iOS." It’s unclear whether they intend to release the full game on iOS, or something more along the lines of a spin-off standalone experience, but whatever the case consider me interested in checking it out and whatever form Erica on iOS does take Flavourworks says we’ll be able to “Try it for free this Friday."
