SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘DEEMO -Reborn-‘, ‘Hitori Logic’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 4th, 2021. It’s our first article of the year, and as you might expect after a long holiday break there isn’t much news to talk about. There are some new releases that trickled out over the last few days, and a whole bunch of sales. After last year, I won’t complain about a quiet start to this one, though. Especially with what’s waiting for me later this month, but we’ll talk about that another day. For now, let’s catch up on what we missed while we were sleeping everything off.

New Releases

DEEMO -Reborn- ($25.00)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

If I were making a follow-up to DEEMO, I would have titled it DEEMORE. But that’s why I work here and not at a game company, friends. At any rate, if you’ve played DEEMO or any of Rayark’s rhythm games, this one probably has your attention from the title alone. As you might guess from the subtitle, this is actually a remake rather than a sequel. You get more than 60 classic songs to play with new pieces of music for returning players to challenge. The biggest changes are in the presentation, which has been completely redone in rather impressive style. Is all of that enough to warrant an extra purchase if you already own the original? Hm. I’ll leave that up to you.

Hitori Logic ($4.99)

This is another distant cousin of Sudoku from the folks at Hook Games, and it’s one of those things that is really complicated to explain but easy enough to pick up when you start playing yourself. The idea is that you have a grid of numbers, and each row and column can’t have repeating numbers. So you mark duplicate numbers red to eliminate them, but you can’t have red numbers adjacent to each other in the cardinal directions. On top of that, the non-eliminated numbers have all be connected vertically or horizontally at the end. Well, I told you it was complicated to explain. It works nicely enough in practice, so if you’re looking for some logic puzzle fun this will keep you entertained for a bit.

Speed Truck Racing ($9.99)

I love a good arcade racing game. This… is not a good arcade racing game. Nothing about it works on even a satisfactory level. Controls, presentation, amount of content, physics, track layouts, and opponent AI are all awful, and the game is so bug-ridden that you can’t be sure what place you’ve finished in until the results actually come up. Another very poor racer that can’t live up to its rather reasonable price, unfortunately. But hey, at least it has a four-player local multiplayer mode. That gives it an edge over some other lousy racers on the eShop. Not much of one, but we takes what we can gets.

Arcade Archives Shanghai III ($7.99)

You know it and maybe you love it: Shanghai, the game that would forever cause confusion between cultures when the word ‘mahjong’ is spoken. This is one of Sunsoft’s many takes on the game, originally released in the arcades in 1993. Match the tiles and try to clear the board, but be quick about it because you’re on a timer. Arcade game and all. As this game was only released in Japan back in the day, most of the in-game text is in Japanese. All the standard Arcade Archives menus have support for multiple languages of course. The Switch isn’t exactly hurting for mahjong solitaire games, and many of them offer more options at a lower price than this one. Unless you’re all about having a complete set of Arcade Archives or have some specific interest in the history behind it, Shanghai III doesn’t have a lot to offer.

#Xmas, Super Puzzles Dream ($5.99)

Arriving a week after Christmas with a Christmas game is certainly on brand for the Super Puzzles Dream series, I suppose. That #Xmas hashtag is surely hopping right now. Well, whatever. It’s another Super Puzzles Dream game, offering the exact same “jigsaw puzzle meets falling block puzzle" experience as the last two or three titles. But, you know, with Christmas pictures. That’s what it is. Some people must be buying these because the developer keeps on pushing them out, so if that’s you, here you are.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Oh hey, lots of games there. That’s what happens when you take four or five days off, I guess. So, highlights. The nice folks at Rebellion are having a sale, with their excellent Sniper games on for very low prices. 2K Games has a number of titles on sale as well, though that’s not a terribly rare occurrence. What is uncommon is Hamster having a sale on some of its Arcade Archives and ACA NEOGEO releases. It’s hard to say when or even if some of those games will be discounted again, so stock up if you like the look of them. There’s a lot of good stuff in the outbox as well, some of which may not be on sale again for a long while. Comb through both lists carefully, friends.

That’s all for today, friends. I’m not really sure what we’ll be seeing tomorrow, as there aren’t currently any new releases on the schedule. I’d imagine there will be some new sales and perhaps some news as things start unfrosting again, and I suppose I could review something from my pile if we’re really hard-up for content. I hope you all have a great Monday, and as always, thanks for reading!
