SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Updates, ‘Super Meat Boy Forever’ and Today’s Other New Releases, Plus Tons of Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 23rd, 2020. It’s the day before the day before Christmas, and you would think the new releases and sales would be slowing down. But no, still an awful lot to look at today. If you caught yesterday’s article, you may already know that I was at the hospital today. It wasn’t quite as long as I thought it would be, but it was still long enough that today’s feature is a bit lighter than it may have been. Let’s check it out!

News

Sephiroth, New Mii Fighter Costumes, and More in the ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Update

While you may have already unlocked him via the Sephiroth Challenge last week, Sephiroth is now available for all who own the Fighters Pass 2 or the appropriate character pack. Also available are the new Mii Fighter costumes that feature Tifa, Barret, and Aerith from Final Fantasy VII and Geno from Super Mario RPG. Naturally all of this coincides with the latest update for the game, so go ahead and download that if you want to get at any of these goodies. Still a couple of open character slots to go. This is where I’ll note that Austin the Gardenscapes Butler doesn’t have a Trophy, Spirit, or Mii Fighter costume and is thus still on the table.

New Releases

Super Meat Boy Forever ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

You know, there’s a lesson here: putting the word ‘Forever’ in the title of your game is just inviting disaster. Originally announced for mobile in 20-heck-darned-14 with a 2015 release in mind, it just sort of quietly went away as Team Meat mobile things tend to. It was re-announced for Switch and a bunch of other platforms in 2017 with a 2018 release planned. That clearly didn’t work out either. But now here we are in the final days of 2020, and Super Meat Boy Forever is a thing that can be bought and played. It was originally an auto-runner, but I’m not sure if it’s still set up that way. What I can say is that it features procedurally-generated levels, so it’s a slightly different game each time you play it. Seems like a no-brainer if you enjoyed its excellent predecessor.

Drunken Fist ($7.99)

This is a silly physics-based beat-em-up game that is amusing for about five minutes. It is single-player only, features seven levels, and allows you to pee on people. It’s very slow and awkward to play, but your character is drunk so I’m not sure what else you would expect. This game is often on sale on Steam for about a buck, and I could see getting a buck’s worth of stupid laughs out of it. But it really is more of an interactive joke than anything else, and eight bucks might be a little much for that. I mean, eight bucks gets you an Arcade Archives game, and there are lots of great beat-em-ups you could grab from that line-up. None of them will let you pee on people, however. So… do what you will.

Season Match 3: Curse of the Witch Crow ($9.99)

It’s another Season Match game, and that means more match-3 gameplay with a story to keep you moving forward. I think this one is still available on the App Store as a free-to-play game. This version removes all of the IAP stuff in exchange for that up-front price, but if you want to get a taste of what this title offers you can check out that free version on your mobile device. I don’t have a whole lot to say about this game. There’s nothing original about it, but if you enjoy match-3 games you might appreciate its decent production values and familiar mechanics.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Okay, seriously. Where do these sales keep coming from? A bevy of discounts on Jackbox Party Packs for those of you having small gatherings for the holidays, sales on the superb Alwa games, some hard-to-pass-up prices on EA’s recent racers, and Octopath Traveler for half-off? Not bad, not bad. There isn’t a whole ton in the outbox, which makes sense as everyone wants to show off their best prices to those opening up Nintendo Switch hardware on Christmas morning, but there are a few things in there to check on. So… do that.

That’s all for today, friends. I will be back tomorrow but will likely be taking Christmas Day off. We’ll catch up on whatever happens then on Monday. Our Best of 2020 content should be rolling out soon as well. It’s been slowed up a bit by my health issues but we will have plenty for you to enjoy in that regard. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
