Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for October 27th, 2020. In today’s article, we have a few tasty news items to check out before we head into a rather busy Tuesday of new releases. Cobra Kai, Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, and Dungreed lead the charge with a few others pulling up the rear. We finish things up with a look at the latest sales, along with the outgoing discounts for the day. I wanted to have a review in here as well, but things just didn’t work out. Maybe tomorrow! Let’s check out what we’ve got.
News
‘Super Mario 3D All-Stars’ Getting Camera Options in November Update
There certainly isn’t any shortage of complaints a person could levy at Super Mario 3D All-Stars, but it seems like Nintendo is addressing at least one of them. The Version 1.1.0 update is scheduled to go out on November 17th, and it will apparently add camera and aiming options for all three games. The basic situation here is that Nintendo changed some of the camera controls in the games, switching inverted controls to non-inverted. This update will allow you to individually set camera and aiming controls to inverted/normal as you like for each game. Nice. No idea if this update has anything else to offer, but if we find anything out we’ll let you know.
‘Minecraft Dungeons’ Spooky Fall Event Update Now Available
Speaking of updates, there’s a new one available for Minecraft Dungeons. The Spooky Fall Event officially kicks off today and runs through November 3rd. Time-limited Seasonal Trials offer up special seasonally-appropriate challenges and rewards, with some exclusive gear and weapons on offer for those who excel. Included in the Seasonal Trials is the new Night Mode challenge, and you’ll find the new Spooky Item set among the rewards.
‘Corpse Killer: 25th Anniversary Edition’ Coming to Switch
You know, at the time FMV games were at their most prolific, I tended to see them as terrible things not really worth considering. Time has give me a different perspective: FMV games can be good, but most of the ones that came out then simply weren’t. Still, there’s a certain schlocky charm to many of them, and Corpse Killer from Digital Pictures leans into that as hard as any of them. On most of the original platforms it launched on, this was a light-gun game and as such was a little easier to deal with than the average FMV game. A special 25th Anniversary Edition was released a little while back on PC and PlayStation 4, and thanks to an announcement from Limited Run Games we now know it will be coming to Switch in a special physical version. Presumably, a digital release will also be happening. No idea when it will be hitting, but hey – it’s coming. Orders for that physical set open on October 30th at Limited Run Games.
New Releases
Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty ($29.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
Hello. Follow me. The original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee was a very strange, curiously compelling little puzzle platformer. It was a big hit in its time, so it wasn’t too surprising when the revived Oddworld Inhabitants decided to remake it back in 2014. And what a lovely remake it is! I wrote lots of words about this game when it hit mobile in 2017, so I don’t have much more to say here. It’s an excellent remake of a wonderful game whose core message has managed to stay relevant for more than two decades. If you’ve somehow missed out on playing it on other platforms, this is as good a place as any to change that.
Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues ($39.99)
The Karate Kid and video games have not had a great history together. The LJN game for the NES, developed by Atlus of all companies, has become infamous as one of the worst games of its era. One of the poster children for LJN’s shoddy reputation as a slinger of licensed junk, really. And now here’s Game Mill, who you could probably argue is the LJN of the modern age, with its own Karate Kid game based on the amazing Cobra Kai series. This is a beat-em-up with two campaigns, one for Cobra Kai and the other for Miyagi-Do. You have to beat both to get the real ending, of course. All up there are eight fighters, with Johnny and Daniel each leading three of their students. You can play with a friend in local co-op, which is an important feature for any beat-em-up. Look, I love The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai, but this game… it just looks very, very rough. Especially in a year where we saw the magnificent Streets of Rage 4. I don’t think even Mr. Miyagi could salvage this one.
Instant Chef Party ($24.99)
Wait, is the party instant or are the chefs instant? Because the implications of the latter are rather horrifying. Like, just add a drop of water to this tiny ball of moss and twenty seconds later, you’ve got a chef. Where do they come from? Are they truly alive? We’re not meant to know the answers to these questions, I think. At any rate, Instant Chef Party is a four-player local party game that vaguely resembles things like Mario Party. Except this one has chefs, of course. It’s from the makers of the Instant Sports games and I rather expect that like those this will be neither particularly good nor particularly bad.
Dungreed ($14.99)
I don’t know what to do with that ‘G’ in the title, and it’s really bothering me. Is it a hard G? A soft G? ‘Dung-reed‘ or ‘Dunj-reed‘? ‘Dun-greed‘, surely. Well, whatever. Dungreed is a fairly fun side-scrolling roguelite action game that has charmed many in its PC incarnation. I’d imagine this Switch port offers much the same experience, but at a slightly higher price and a more easily portable form. Oddly it’s published by Nicalis here, which wasn’t the case on PC. That probably accounts for the price difference. Anyway, a solid game that fills the belly if not the spirit for those on the hunt for yet another roguelite.
Carto ($19.99)
This is a cute game with a unique hook that pulls you in nicely. Unfortunately, that hook isn’t quite strong enough to sustain the game even for its relatively short running time, but I certainly appreciate the fresh approach. A little girl and her granny are separated, and you need to help close the distance between them so that they can find each other. You do this by manipulating the map, switching its pieces around to make NPCs appear who will give you more pieces. You can’t just do things willy-nilly as there are rules to it all. You’ll have to listen to the NPCs carefully and solve some other puzzles as you go. Not bad, but it relies a lot on the same bag of tricks so it can get repetitive after a couple of hours.
My Universe – Fashion Boutique ($29.99)
The first game in the My Universe series was pretty dire even for what it was, so I hope things turn around with this one. You’re put in charge of a fashion store, which eventually leads to you making your own fashions and being invited to fashion shows. Help your customers coordinate, improve your shop, create clothes, and try to get some publicity in order to hit the big leagues of Milan, Paris, and more. The actual creation of the clothes seems to rely on mini-games, and in other respects this seems to be a very light take on the sim genre. I don’t by any means think this is aimed at me, so we’ll have to see how it plays with the intended audience.
The Bluecoats North & South ($29.99)
The original North & South was a pretty sweet Amiga game from Infogrames that got a fairly popular port on the NES from Kemco. Yes, that Kemco. Anyway, the nature of the subject matter means that it’s been possible for a number of companies to take a kick at the can in terms of remaking or re-imagining it. One such company is Microids, who made an okay-ish version for mobile back in 2012. In many respects, this Switch version is quite similar to that effort. There are some differences, such as what I believe is a new FPS mode, and the game has full local two-player support right from the get-go. Otherwise, you’re looking at the same turn-based/real-time/action hybrid that charmed so many over the years. I think the original from thirty years ago is better, but I would, wouldn’t I?
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
Well, you certainly can’t call this a typical line-up of new sales. Some interesting games in there, though if I’m being honest there’s nothing in there I feel very strongly about. That’s just me, though. Make sure you have a look with your own eyes. The outbox is quite large but most of it will be back around within a month, I’m sure. One exception is Oceanhorn 2, which releases on Switch tomorrow and probably won’t have a sale again for a while.

There should be some news and new sales to look at, as well. I hope you all have a fancy Tuesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
