Best iPhone Game Updates: ‘Hearthstone’, ‘Mini Metro’, ‘Terraria’, ‘Mortal Kombat’, and More

TouchArcade Rating:

Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. I was challenged to not write the words ‘bug fixes’ in this week’s article, outside of this opening paragraph anyway. Somehow I’ve managed to pull it off and still find a nice selection of updates for you to check out as you get started on your week. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!

Toon Blast, Free The obligatory F2P matching puzzle update kicks things off, which is a rare situation. That’s because these updates are usually filler when I can’t find something better to include. Enough about how the sausage is made, though. As you would expect for an update to this game, you get 50 new levels to play. There’s some business in the notes about this having something to do with a Haunted House, but I would imagine there’s no story in-game about this new batch of stages. Nor do I think most players are really looking for that.

The Elder Scrolls: Blades, Free This is apparently still a thing. I never hear anyone talk about it, but I’m sure there are plenty of people playing it. In the newest version, a new Quest Map has been implemented that gives you a new way to access quests, jobs, and events. Besides the UI shot in the arm, there’s also a new type of enemy called Dark Seducers. Sounds a bit saucy. Along with the new enemy, you can get Dark Seducer gear in the Sigil Shop. Imagine asking the clerk for that, eh? Yeah, give me those Dark Seducer pants. Maybe the Dark Seducer boots, too? Thanks, pal.

Mortal Kombat, Free This new update for Mortal Kombat is for all the noobs out there. To be more specific, the Noobs. To be very very specific, the MK11 Noobs. The newest MK11 Diamond character is none other than the shadowy Noob Saibot. He’s exclusively available as a Faction Wars Season Reward. Aside from the new character, there’s the new Faction Wars: Survivor Mode, the return of the Tower of Horror, thee new Nightmare Tower and its associated equipment, and more. Heh, I just realized that you’d have to be the opposite of a noob to actually get access to Noob. Well, that’s how things go sometimes.

Subway Surfers, Free Lots of games going in on the Halloween stuff this week, but few are going as hard as Subway Surfers. The kids head to Cambridge, which is spooky for whatever reason at the moment. There are three new characters here, all suitably adorned in their Halloween finest: Noel, Cathy, and Morgan. Make your way through sinister forests and try to get the Beelzebook Board to ride in style. There are also some extra Halloween Bundles you can buy if you’re that-way inclined.

Hearthstone, Free It’s a fairly big update for Hearthstone this time around, with most of the joy surrounding the addition of a new mode. Duels blends the enjoyment of Dungeon Runs with head-to-head battles. After each match you can tweak your deck with minions, treasures, and spells to better take on the next challenge. Madness at the Darkmoon Faire will be available from November 17th with 135 new cards and more, and as of this update you can now pre-order it. There are other smaller additions and improvements in this update, but I’ll let you jump into the game and read up on them yourself if you’re interested. .

Jetpack Joyride, Free Wow, Jetpack Joyride has been rolling out update after update recently. It wasn’t too long ago that we had that Metal Slug event, then the Back to the Future update swung around again, and now we’ve got a Halloween update. In this one, you can look forward to earning the Scary Arm Machine (oh boy, clown-themed), the Bleeding Heart Jetpack, and the Demon Wings Jetpack in the latest spooky event. Good luck, you’ll need it!

Terraria, $4.99 Yeah, this happens a lot. The mobile version of Terraria tends to fall well behind the other versions for a while before, boom, a bunch of updates arrive in one package. Still not fully caught up, mind you. But very, very close to it. This brings us up to version 1.4.0.5, adding all the content from Journey’s End along with things from the post-1.3.0 updates we had been missing up until now. That means you can enjoy the benefits of things like the wiring overhaul, the desert overhaul, party events, the Old One’s Army crossover event, and more. For actually getting this version caught up, I’m going to give it the coveted UMMSotW award for this week.

Mini Metro, $3.99 I admit I was tempted to give the coveted prize to Mini Metro this time, because this is a dandy update for a very dandy game. But I didn’t. You can’t really predict how these things will go, unless there are literally a bunch of Spider-Mans involved. Anyway, Mini Metro has two new destinations. The megacity of Lagos, Nigeria is home to 21 million residents, making it quite the challenge for aspiring railway designers. Can you keep things on-time and working smoothly? A slightly different challenge waits in Santiago, Chile. This city is built in the Andes mountains, and it’s going to take all of your skills to plan things out properly.

Dan The Man, Free Has Barry Steakfries always been in the icon for this game? Did I just not notice Barry chilling there behind Dan? Uh, at any rate, this is a big one for a game that often gets very small updates. This new version has a multiplayer mode! Wow, co-op baddie-bashing with a best bud? Bonkers. There’s a Quick Match mode where you compete online to see who can rack up the higher score, and a Friendly Match mode where you invite a chum to play online together. That’s solid. Well-done, devs.

The Greedy Cave, $0.99 We’ll finish things up by checking the newest update to an oldie-but-goodie. The original Greedy Cave still gets updates now and then, and this is without question one of them. What an awful sentence. Well, I don’t get paid for my masterful prose. There’s a new race system in this update, which gives you access to more different heroes aside from boring old humans. Finally, I can re-enact my favorite scenes from Teen Wolf. Lots of other new things in here, like Villas, Donations, Adventure Licenses, Taverns, and more. There’s even a new pet in the form of a Musician Frog. Is that “Hello My Baby, Hello My Darling, Hello My Ragtime Gal" Musician Frog, or “It’s Not Easy Being Green" Musician Frog? Probably neither, but you’ll have to play to find out.

That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
