SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Clubhouse Games’ Review, New Releases Featuring ‘Invisible, Inc.’ and More, Plus the Latest Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for June 16th, 2020. In today’s article, we’ve got a full review of Nintendo’s recent release Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, summaries of all of the newest games including surprise release Invisible, Inc. and the Darius Cozmic Collection sets. We finish things up with the usual list of new and outgoing sales, and I’m afraid the latter is the bulkier list by far today. Let’s dash into action!

Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics ($39.99)

Long before it was a video game company, Nintendo’s business was largely centered around another sort of gaming: card games. At the start, it manufactured Japanese playing cards called hanafuda, eventually becoming the most popular producer of said cards in Japan. In 1959, it made a deal with Disney to use the company’s characters on its Western-style playing cards, shifting what was previously seen as a product meant for shifty gambling adults into a family activity. That eventually led to the toy business, which ultimately saw Nintendo enter the burgeoning video game market in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

For most people around the world, Nintendo is a video game company and nothing more. In Japan, the company still makes its playing cards, albeit as more of a side business than anything else. Still, every once in a while it likes to pay homage to its earlier history. I think that’s part of why it makes things like Clubhouse Games. This collection includes 51 games and one little extra toy in the form of a simple piano, and that set of games naturally counts hanafuda in its number. It also includes a number of other popular Japanese board and card games like Takoyaki, Riichi Mahjong, and Shogi.

Its focus goes beyond its home country, of course. Games from all over the world are featured, from Texas Hold ‘Em to Mancala to Carrom. Beyond the board and card games, it also includes several mini-games like golf, air hockey, darts, curling, and a shooting gallery. The sports games are simplified versions that immediately call to mind Wii Sports, with bowling once again being a real crowd-pleaser. As trite as it is to say, there’s something here for just about everyone. On top of that, unless you’re very well-versed in a variety of games, you’re bound to find something new to enjoy here as well. You can play against the AI, which is surprisingly competent, or take on another human. If you don’t feel like competing against anyone, games like Mahjong Solitaire and Klondike Solitaire will help you pass the time.

Every single one of these games has had a rather nice amount of attention paid to it. Rules are explained clearly, and there are achievements for each to aim for. Unlocking those achievements rewards you with interesting trivia about the game in question. The interface has also had a lot of love put into it. While you can just pull up a big list of games and choose your favorite from there, you can also explore a globe where each game can be found in its country of origin, complete with a guide who will tell you about its history. When you start each game, two little figures will have a conversation about the game, briefly explaining its rules and perhaps a tip or two. More comprehensive rules can be called up from each game’s menu.

It’s not a flawless experience, though. While there is support for multiplayer in both online and offline modes, what exactly you can play offline is limited by your specific set-up. If you only have a single system you won’t, for example, be able to play any games that involve hiding your cards or tiles from other players. There’s a free app that other players can download onto their Switch units if they have them, but therein lay the rub: they have to have their own units. I mean, I’m not sure what else Nintendo could have done here, but it’s something worth knowing before you buy. Once you have those extra systems, you can push them together for some games to make one big screen, which is cool.

At any rate, Clubhouse Games celebrates the history of play and to a smaller extent the early history of Nintendo itself in grand style. It’s not just about the quantity, though with 51 games for forty dollars there is certainly that. It’s also about the care given to each of these titles, big and small. Some of these games have stand-alone takes available on the eShop from a variety of publishers, but none of them match the versions you’ll find in here. As silly as it may seem to buy an assortment of games that you could easily replicate in the real world, having them all available at hand in such well-realized forms makes this the perfect game to keep kicking around on your Switch to pull out now and then.

New Releases

Invisible, Inc. Nintendo Switch Edition ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Klei Entertainment brings another one of their fine games to the Nintendo Switch. Invisible, Inc. is a turn-based strategy game with a heavy emphasis on stealth and precise teamwork. There are a variety of agents to choose from, and the worlds are randomly generated. Between those two elements and the wide array of items, augments, and programs, no two games will be quite alike. This version also includes the Contingency Plan DLC, an expansion that further extends the amount of options and campaign content. Those who have played this game on the iPad or another platform before know just how good it is, and this Switch version is a great way to play it.

Jump Rope Challenge (Free)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Okay, this isn’t really much of a game, but it is a nice little freebie. Apparently it was put together by a few Nintendo developers while they were working from home as a way to get a little extra daily exercise while socially isolating. Set a daily goal and use your Joy-Cons to jump some virtual rope each day to stay active. A second player can join in with their own Joy-Cons so that you can have a good old-fashioned rope-off. Just like my grandfather used to do, I’m guessing. It’s cute, it’s free, and it doesn’t take up much space on your Switch at all. Please stretch properly beforehand and jump responsibly.

Darius Cozmic Collection Arcade ($44.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

There’s an audience for this game and its cousin, and it’s definitely not everyone. Right up front and obvious, they’re not cheap. On top of that, Darius is a real back-breaker of a series even by the relatively high difficulty standards of the shoot-em-up genre. But if you are a shoot-em-up fan, I think you’ll find this Arcade set at the very least to be worth your time and money. It includes the arcade versions of Darius, Darius II/Sagaia, and the absolutely sublime Darius Gaiden. You get three versions of the original and three versions of the sequel (including the dual screen version). While the differences between the versions of the first game are relatively minor, Darius II and Sagaia feel very different from each other. M2 handled the chores on this set and did an absolutely stellar job. All of the games are worth taking a bash at, but Darius Gaiden in particular is an all-time classic of the genre.

Darius Cozmic Collection Console ($59.99)

This set, on the other hand, is really only for the hardcore Darius fans and those who appreciate retro curios. It includes the TurboGrafx 16 port of the original Darius, known as Darius Plus, along with the extremely rare boss rush bonus game Darius Alpha. It’s a decent port, and Darius Alpha is certainly a fun extra. Next up, ports of the sequel. You get the Mega Drive Darius II, its localized Genesis version Sagaia, and the impressive Master System port of Sagaia. None of these ports are bad, but you’re naturally better off playing the arcade versions in the here and now. Past the ports, you also get Japanese and Western versions of the Super NES Darius Twin, which is probably the gentlest game in the series if you want to get used to the water, so to speak. The collection is rounded out with the Japanese and Western releases of the relatively obscure Darius Force/Super Nova. I like it a lot, but I’m both of those things I mentioned in the first sentence of this summary. Do what you think is best.

Summer in Mara ($24.99)

I really, really wish this game was better than it is. It’s absolutely gorgeous, bright and cheerful in all the right ways, and there’s a friendly and charming vibe to its world and characters that just makes you want to hunker down and stay a while. But then you get to the meat of the game, which is a whole lot of fetch-questing. In the early going, it’s fine. You’re going to new places and exploring the colorful world, and the quests give you a good reason to poke around. But soon you’ll have seen most of what you’re going to see. That won’t stop the game from sending you back and forth, going over here to pick up a thing to bring over there, and a real tedium starts to set in. Are those first several hours of joy worth the price of admission even with the let-down in the back half? Almost. Almost.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Well, all good things must come to an end. The huge Summer Sale is wrapping up, so if there are any games you were holding off on picking up now is the time to do it. Keep in mind that as big as that outgoing list is, it’s only a selection of the games that are included. If you see one game from a company on there, feel free to look up their other titles as many of them will also be on sale. We probably won’t be seeing discounts like this again for at least a few months, so take advantage of them while you can. As for new sales, ToeJam & Earl is probably the only one worth looking at unless you have some very specific interests.
