SwitchArcade Round-Up: The Latest ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Event, Today’s New Release ‘Doubles Hard’, the Latest Sales Featuring ‘ToeJam & Earl’ and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for April 15th, 2020. In today’s article, we try to make the best of a pretty slow day. We’ve got a couple of news items, one of which is at least a bit interesting. There’s a new release to look at, and it’s somewhat less interesting. We round things out with a list of sales, and as usual there is treasure to be found within. Let’s have a look!

News

Contents of the ‘Double Dragon & Kunio-kun: Retro Brawler Bundle’ to Be Sold Separately

A couple of months ago, Arc System Works released a localized version of its excellent 8-bit beat-em-up collection in the west under the title Double Dragon & Kunio-kun: Retro Brawler Bundle. For $39.99, it gave you 18 titles to play, the bulk of which were heretofore untranslated versions of games from the Famicom Kunio-kun/River City series. It even offered enhanced versions of most of the games, allowing you to play with less slowdown and flicker if you wanted to.

Well, if you had your eye on one or two of the games from the set but didn’t want to plunk down forty bucks, you may be in luck. A listing for Double Dragon II: The Revenge has appeared on the eShop, set to release tomorrow for $4.99. Its description makes it clear that this is the version from the Retro Brawler Bundle, and I have to believe this isn’t going to be the only game Arc System Works chooses to sell this way. We’ll have to see what the schedule will be for the other titles. It’s odd to lead off with this one, as it is currently available as part of the NES Switch Online app, but hey.

It’s a Screwed-Up World in the Latest ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Event

Oh, it’s Wednesday again. Those days are just bleeding together these days, aren’t they? Well, that means it’s time for the latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event, and perhaps true to the times we are currently living in, it’s all about everyone getting screwed. Wait a second, let me read that again. Ah, I see. It’s actually about the Screw Attack, Samus’s signature move. This three-day tournament kicks off on Friday and will run through the weekend. All of the participating fighters will be able to make use of the Screw Attack, so bring your vertigo medicine.

New Releases

Doubles Hard ($5.99)

Our sole new release for today is this puzzler from the folks at Ultimate Games. Doubles Hard, as near as I can tell, is something like the classic Boulder Dash but played on a cube. You need to collect all the diamonds in each stage while avoiding falling boulders and pursuing enemies. Personally, I’d rather play the original Boulder Dash again, but if you think Doubles Hard looks cool, don’t let me stop you. I mean, it’s not all that expensive a game to bite on. Oh wow, I just got what is going on with the game’s title. An anagram, how clever.

Sales

If you like those desktop sports games, you’re in business today. Outside of that, the new sales today come down to three quality titles: ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove!, Disney Classics: Aladdin & The Lion King, and Mistover. All three have their ups and downs, but the discounts make it a lot easier to look past those downs. In the outbox, WB Games is finishing up its latest range of sales, with all kinds of LEGO games up for grabs for low prices. Chasm, Axiom Verge, and Owlboy will see their latest sales wrapping up as well, for those on the search for another quality 2D action-adventure game to play.

More than 15 new games will hit the eShop tomorrow, and I being the fool that I am will be summarizing each and every one of them as usual. Join me on my mad quest, won’t you? I hope you all have a decent Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
