Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. While things have definitely slowed down thanks to the current situation in the world, all those awesome developers out there are still doing their best to bring us fun stuff to check out in this article each week. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!
DOOM, $4.99 I’ll be frank: I think in many ways this new mobile version of DOOM is never going to be as good as Carmack’s original port. But I appreciate that they keep trying. This latest update adds a new free add-on episode and also makes a number of improvements to things like sound effects, performance, and so on. Most of the biggest updates are to the audio, which I’m glad to see as DOOM has an outstanding aural presence. Note this update also hit DOOM II, but I’m only including one of them because that is the way of our ancient ancestors.
Fortnite, Free You know, the thing about Fortnite is that its update notes tend to be vague and unhelpful, making it a little hard to include in these articles. But I know at least one cool thing that hit the game in the last week, so here we are. Those who have purchased this season’s Battle Pass can unlock a cool new skin by looking for the two pistols hidden in the game’s menu screens. Praise the Lord and pass the chimichangas, because once you’ve done that you can suit up as the Merc with the Mouth at any of the phone booths found on the island. Uh, that’s Deadpool, for those who aren’t all nickname-savvy. You can also unlock his katanas and an alternate maskless skin. Keep your eyes peeled for Deadpool’s party boat, too.
Marvel Unlimited, Free I know what you’re thinking: pal, this isn’t a game. So why is it in the BEST iPHONE GAME UPDATES article? Okay look, friend. Chances are good that you are spending a lot of time inside right now. Or maybe you’re working super-hard in a very stressful situation. Either way, some comic books might do you good. Marvel has made a whole bunch of full storylines available for free in Marvel Unlimited, even if you have no subscription. Marvel Unlimited has possibly the MOST SPIDER-MANS of any app ever, so I believe it is fully in keeping with our mission here. Go read some free comics and try to forget about all the crap that each day brings of late. I’ll give this a coveted UMMSotW for this special one-time-only exception.
Neon Chrome, $6.99 Neon Chrome is an awesome twin-stick shooter that is a joy on any platform you play it on. Luckily, the game’s expansion to many other systems hasn’t stopped the mobile port from getting love now and then. This new update isn’t the biggest thing around, but it includes some welcome additions that players will certainly appreciate. If you’re playing on an iPhone XR, you may have noticed some display scaling issues. Those are now fixed. And if you happen to have an Xbox One or PlayStation 4 controller and prefer to play that way, those are now supported, provided you’re on iOS 13 and up of course.
Knives Out, Free This stuff was already hinted at in the last update, but now that it’s all out in the open with the latest version we might as well summarize it. Eagles vs. Tigers is the latest season in the game. Pick your side and wield a new special stage weapon on the Fighting Field map in the form of the Wild Cannon, and do your best to rack up wins in this shorter-than-usual season. There are tons of rewards available for those who are skilled and lucky, so head into battle and see what you can come out with.
Marvel Contest of Champions, Free There’s a new challenger incoming in Marvel Contest of Champions, and it’s a bit of an odd pick. The Sorcerer Supreme of Battleworld joins the now rather large cast of characters, and she’s sure to bring some cool tricks to the table. Aside from all that newcomer business, you’ll also find a bunch of new quests and events to play, including From Beyond and Barons’ War. A new game mode will see you entering the domain of Ultron soon enough, and tons of balance adjustments and bug fixes have been made.
Injustice 2, Free It’s not all about the Marvel stuff this week, friends. DC’s stuff may not update quite so often, but we still see new content every month or so. This latest version adds a new fighter, and naturally she hails from the Suicide Squad. The Enchantress is ready to go toe-to-toe with the best of the worst thanks to her powerful buffs and ranged attacks. She also has a healing ability for her Suicide Squad teammates and herself that triggers when they resist Critical Attacks. This update also beefs up Suicide Squad Harley Quinn and fixes a whole bunch of bugs.
Real Racing 3, Free Real Racing 3 drifts around the corner with this cool new update. As usual, you can expect some new cars and events to keep you inserting those coins. Let’s get right down to brass tacks, then. The new cars? The McLaren Senna and its beefed-up cousin the McLaren Senna GTR. While you’ll probably need enormous luck or deep pockets to get those, you’ll have chances to earn a variety of other McLaren cars in some new Limited-Time Series. There are lots of other things going on, so do check it out if you’re looking for some racing action.
Homescapes, Free Obligatory free-to-play matching puzzle update for the week, and thank goodness it’s Austin Time again. A new event is coming soon where you’ll have to renovate Olivia’s bedroom and make it a nice place to chill. There’s also an Easter event kicking off today, and a Season of Wonders event where you can get a corgi. Not a real one. A virtual corgi. VIRTUAL CORGI. That was my favorite 32X game. You can also play a new story chapter, and the puzzles have a new element in the form of the refrigerator. Make matches and use power-ups to get the soda cans out of them. Sure, it’s a bit of a stretch, but I appreciate that they try to add new things now and then.
ANOTHER EDEN, Free We’ll close things out with a rather little update, relatively speaking. I just think Another Eden is a really cool game, so I like to keep it around in the news whenever I can. This update adds a new character called Premaya, but apart from that it’s really just a bunch of fixes for some issues that cropped up in the last version. That’s about it, but hey, there’s plenty here to enjoy while waiting for the next big story update.
That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
