Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 27th, 2019. This is the last full week of the year, and perhaps not surprisingly there isn’t a whole lot going on in the world of video games. Still, there are a handful of new releases to check out, and we’ll do just that. There are also some new sales to look at, but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to yesterday. Finally, we’ve also got news about the newest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event. That’s fun, yes? Let’s slide on in!

Wear Your Short Shorts for the Latest ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Event
I know, I know. It’s not Wednesday, so why am I telling you about this now? The holidays kind of played havoc with the schedule, but I’m back in the office with enough time to let you know about this week’s Smash event that kicks off today and runs through the weekend. For whatever reason, it’s all about the shorts. Spirits wearing shorts will feature prominently, and defeating them will earn you extra snacks. At any rate, if you’re reading this on the day it’s posted, you still have lots of time to get in on this shorts-fest.
New Releases
Arcade Archives Vs. Balloon Fight ($7.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
You know what? I like Balloon Fight. Yes, I’m aware it’s more than a little inspired by John Newcomer’s 1982 classic Joust, but surely there’s room in the world for two games about flying ungainly means of transportation in an effort to clip the proverbial wings of your opponents? Anyway, this is a rare treat: the arcade version of Balloon Fight that was developed alongside the NES version. Although it mostly plays the same thanks to some help from the programmer of the NES version (some Iwata guy), there are some interesting differences here like levels that scroll vertically. Definitely worth picking up for Balloon Fight fans. All, what… seventeen of us?
Nurse Love Syndrome ($39.99)
Nurse Love Addiction ($39.99)
This is a pair of visual novels published by Degica that explore the daily lives of young female nurses. There’s a heavy focus on romance here, and there are multiple paths and endings to uncover in each game. Note that these games are firmly in the yuri sub-genre, which means all of the romantic relationships are between women. They’re also aimed at adult players, so there are a lot of risque images. I mean, it’s still a console release, so don’t expect anything too explicit, but there are lots of underpants, suggestive poses, and all sorts of other things Sakurai wouldn’t allow in a Smash Bros. game. I suppose what I’m saying is that these may not be the best choices to play at church.
Croc’s World 3 ($4.99)
Well, it’s another one of these. Clearly, some of you are buying them or else we wouldn’t be in this situation. Anyway, nothing new under the sun here. Guide Croc through 60 more levels of side-scrolling platforming, picking up power-ups and battling enemies as you go. After every 15 levels, you’ll fight a boss. Levels basically come in two visual styles, so don’t expect a bunch of different worlds or anything. I’m assuming that if you liked the first couple of games that you’ll like this one, too. If you haven’t played any of the Croc’s World games before, maybe grab one of the earlier ones on sale to see how you take to the series before dropping a whole five bucks on this one.
Sales
With something like 1000 games on sale right now, you might wonder what possibly could be left. Well, wonder no more, friends. Aksys now joins the fray with a number of its games, including the rather intriguing horror adventures Death Mark and Spirit Hunter: NG. Mortal Kombat 11, having not been on sale for about five days, clearly developed the shakes and had to go back on sale again. Some other neat stuff I’d recommend would be Crossniq+ for the puzzle fans, Miles & Kilo for the platforming fans, and Type: Rider for the typography fans. As for the outbox, Sunday will see the end of Devolver Digital’s latest sale along with the handful of major indie sales that went up a couple of days ago. It’s time to start making those hard choices, as we’re probably not going to see sales this big again for a while once the holiday season wraps up.

That’s all that’s good for this week, friends. Bit of a weird one because of the holidays, but we made it through one way or another. I’m not entirely sure what I’ll be doing with the Round-Up for the first couple of days of next week as I’m skeptical there will be much going on release-wise, but we’ll see what happens. In any case, I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
