Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. We’re closing in on the end of the year, but the way the days are lining up, I’m quite sure we’ll be able to put together one more of these next week. This week has a nice selection of games, but it’s a lot of the usual suspects so I doubt anyone will fall out of their chair reading this. Which is good, because I don’t want anyone to get hurt just before the holidays because of something I did. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!
Disney Magic Kingdoms, Free It is impossible to escape Disney stuff these days. Well, not totally impossible. You could just disengage with pop culture and you’d probably cut it down to a minimum. But then you wouldn’t be reading this site, and I wouldn’t be getting paid, and that’s just bad for everyone. So instead, let us embrace the media octopus and its tender tentacles as it grabs each of us around the angle and shakes the loose change from our pockets. Star Wars! You didn’t expect it, I’m sure, but Star Wars is now in Disney Magic Kingdoms. Rey, Finn, Poe, and BB-8 are battling against the First Order and Kylo Ren. As they do. I’ll ask the same question I always do: where the heck is Jar Jar?
SEGA Heroes: RPG Match 3 Games, Free Lots of stuff going on in SEGA Heroes lately, and I haven’t quite decided how I feel about all of it. There’s now a new tier of hero called Captain that has special abilities beyond even Legendary heroes. Silver the Hedgehog is the first such character, and as you might expect he’s a bit hard to get your hands on. Even his event didn’t offer much in the way of shards, leaving you to try your hand at the chests. The level cap has been raised to 80 as well, giving you plenty of reasons to head out and make with the grinding. I do like that events now give you chest pulls as progress rewards, at least.
Mafia City: War of Underworld, Free This is one of those team-ups that thematically speaking makes a great deal of sense but is nevertheless pretty surprising. SEGA’s awesome beat-em-up RPG series Yakuza visits the world of Mafia City, with Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima obtainable throughout this limited-time event. Hard to believe the little series that people wouldn’t play even if I shoved the games into their hands has become popular enough to do cross-overs with other companies and their games. There are lots of other things in this update, but I’ll be real with you: I don’t care about Mafia City very much. I’m just here for Kiryu-chan.
Pokémon GO, Free Geez, this is still awfully popular, isn’t it? I’m honestly quite impressed that Niantic and The Pokemon Company have been able to maintain interest in what started off as a fairly shallow game. I suppose it’s because of updates like this one. You can now designate a buddy Pokemon who will join you on the map if you feed it treats. You can play with it in AR, and earn perks as you increase your Buddy Level. And isn’t that what life is really about, when you think about it? Aren’t we all just trying to increase our Buddy Levels? Something to chew on.
Mortal Kombat, Free The hot news in this latest update to the mobile Mortal Kombat is the addition of a link bonus for connecting with the Google Stadia version. Ha ha ha, oh man. That was pretty funny, right? Anyway, all twenty-six of the Stadia owners who spent bucks on Mortal Kombat 11 on that platform can take advantage of that, but the rest of us are here for the latest character to join the game: the Terminator from Terminator: Dark Fate. Yeah, Arnie’s here. That’s pretty cool. He’s a Diamond character, so he won’t come easily. Neither will the new items that unlock the ability for any Diamond Sub-Zero to unleash the first mobile Brutality. But it’s nice to have something to shoot for, yeah?
Shadow Fight 3 - RPG Fighting, Free This update is one that many players have been waiting for. It adds in the finale of Chapter 7, with some new bosses, spectacular locations, and the end of the story. For those who have conquered all the previous challenges, a new story mode will put them to the ultimate test. There is some new equipment, three new titled sets, and lots of bugs have been fixed. Shadow bugs? Maybe. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? Not Shaun, I’ll tell you that much.
Disney Heroes: Battle Mode, Free Hopefully I’ve spaced these out well enough that you won’t notice that I’ve included two Disney games in this week’s list. As long as no one calls attention to it, I fully believe I will get away with this quote-unquote perfect crime. Well, you all know how this works. If I’m killing time on stupid jokes, the update can’t be very substantial. And that’s true here, for sure. Here’s what I’ve got for you: Elsa is coming to the game. More new heroes are coming. There are quality of life improvements. That’s it, I’m heading to the next game.
Into the Dead 2, Free Nothing speaks to the holiday season quite like running through shambling crowds trying to survive. The nice thing about Into the Dead 2 is that if you get aggressive with these crowds, you’ll be rewarded instead of being put in the… hoosegow? Do… do people still use that word? I’ve been in Japan a long time now. Anyway, this update adds a Puma companion that has an ability named Hunter’s Call. Use it to call zombies to you so that you can rack up more kills. I mean, who’s the real monster here? Probably not the zombies. That’s my super-original thought for the day, hopefully I can get hired by Vice or something. This update also adds the A45 Apex SMG weapon, and some festive weapon skins for you to celebrate the season in a totally appropriate way.
Injustice 2, Free While I can’t quite understand the timing of this particular update, here it be. What? Gold BvS Superman is evolving! Congratulations! Your Gold BvS Superman evolved into Legendary Justice League Superman! He’s way stronger now, and if you already own the Gold BvS Superman you can upgrade him for free. If you don’t? You’ll have to try your luck at the Special Offers and Chests, as usual. This update also adds a new Universal Gear Type called Artifacts. There are a few other changes, but I’ll leave it up to you to check those out. The new Superman is the biggest deal. Nice tie-in with… the second anniversary of… the end of Justice League‘s theatrical run? No idea. I don’t think there’s any real visual difference between Superman in BvS and Superman in Justice League, anyway.
Mini Metro, $3.99 Guess what? Mini Metro got an update that adds a new Barcelona stage to the game. That is awesome, because any update to Mini Metro is awesome. This is a great game and I will play it anytime. I will play it on a boat. I will play it with a goat. I will play it in a house. I will play it with a mouse. And I will also give the game the penultimate coveted UMMSotW award for this year. I do so like Mini Metro, I do so like it, Sam-I-Etro.
That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates may or may not get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll probably be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
