Best iPhone Game Updates: ‘Mario Kart Tour’, ‘AFK Arena’, ‘Power Rangers: Legacy Wars’, ‘Another Eden’, and More

TouchArcade Rating:

Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. Here’s a fun secret about these articles. This introduction paragraph is actually the last part that I write! And as I look at this stuff I wrote earlier, wow. Things take a turn here, friends. But there are some updates here to check along with the ramblings of an unhinged man, so do enjoy them. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!

Mario Kart Tour, Free Well, Mario Kart Tour must be doing fairly well. Animal Crossing is adopting its subscription model, after all. And hey, it’s a fun game for what it is. This update makes a few adjustments to the UI, adds a list you can check to see what tickets you have, and puts in a bonus for finishing a race while in Frenzy mode. It also likely includes the data for the next tour, which is appropriately a winter-themed event.

Jetpack Joyride, Free Halfbrick has a new game coming out that it’s trying to bill as some sort of redemption arc for the once-mighty company. I wish them luck. Anyway, that’s important for us today because there’s a new free costume in this Jetpack Joyride update. You can play as the Raskull King from Magic Brick Wars, or at least a very close approximation of such. This update also kicks off cycling weekly events from now until Christmas. Have fun!

Sky: Children of the Light, Free Mmm. Reasonably popular game, seems like a big update, somewhat vague update notes. Groovy. Okay, let’s try. This update brings with it the Season of Belonging, which sounds like one of those fake holidays 1980s cartoons made up so that they didn’t have to break immersion by having a relatively contemporary Earth holiday on Moo Mesa or whatever. It offers spirits to discover that have quests, expressions, and cosmetics. Apparently guitars are a thing now? The traditional Season of Belonging guitar serenade, perhaps? There’s a new level in Forest for you to check out, too. Also: bug fixes.

Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, Free Feeling pretty blessed right now that of all of the times and places in the history of the universe I could have been alive, I was born in an era that would see Chun-Li Ranger become a real thing. Yes, Street Fighter characters are back, apparently for good this time. Ryu, Guile, Chun-Li, Cammy, Akuma, the Ryu Ranger, and the new Chun-Li Ranger are here representing Capcom. This is so silly and awesome that I’m going to go ahead and give it the coveted UMMSotW award right now. Yatta, Power Rangers!

SEGA Heroes: RPG Match 3 Games, Free SEGA Heroes had another update this week, though its precise contents are still a little mysterious. The one-year anniversary celebration continues with more free login gifts, at the very least. A new event kicks off today that allows players to battle Dremagen, who is the original character SEGA cooked up as the villain behind the events of this game. We should also be seeing the next set of characters start to appear soon, though which game they’ll be representing can only be speculated on at the moment.

Toy Blast, Free Obligatory low-effort F2P matching puzzle update, go! This time around the Wheel O’ Anguish has selected Toy Blast as our featured title. It has… ready? 50 new levels! Wow! And a little half-hearted backstory that you’ll only see if you check the update notes. Specifically, it’s some nonsense about the future, or at least the future we imagined back when humanity had hope and optimism. Flying cars! Robots! Moving walkways! No money-sucking pieces of engineered brain candy! What a world that would be. But instead we are in the world where I am trying to pull a paragraph that no one will read out of something an intern wrote in forty-three seconds. Them’s the breaks.

AFK Arena, Free Dang, that was one downer description back there. In hindsight, I probably should have ended with that one? But as canon has firmly established, I lack a delete key, so on we go. AFK Arena has a new character! It is a Mauler hero named Tidus – Shadowmane. HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAA. Wait, there’s another new character. The Graveborn hero Izold – The Forgotten also joins the roster in this new version. Finally, there’s a new Voyage of Wonders adventure called Highburn Stronghold, where everyone has well-trimmed sideburns and phenomenal grip strength. Maybe. Probably not.

Disney Heroes: Battle Mode, Free But seriously, sometimes I wonder about the damage all of this exposure to carefully-crafted fodder does to our brains. I worked at an EB Games something like 16 years ago, and I still to this day can’t help but hear the Sonic Heroes theme song whenever I see a game with a title that’s like Two-Syllables Heroes. Disney Heroes, Disney Herooooes, NA NA NA NA NA NA NAAAAA-NA-NA-NA-NAAA! That’s not healthy. I can barely even remember my great-grandmother’s voice, but that nonsense? Locked in for life, apparently. Speaking of things that never leave your brain, this update adds Ducktales characters to the game. Not ponytails or cottontails, just… SEE!?

Marvel Contest of Champions, Free It’s all just a series of hamster wheels, and we voluntarily skip from one to the next with glee. I mean, don’t get me wrong. They are fun. Hamster wheels are totally fun too, that’s why the hamsters get all up on them. But it sometimes feels a little… frustrating, I guess? Did we ever have a chance? We were all inundated with this stuff from birth, and in a sense it’s an absolute destiny. Like, why am I excited that I can play Doctor Doom in Contest of Champions now? And is it really wrong to feel that way? He was originally created to entertain, and it’s hardly the fault of the character or creator that the company who owned him went on to become as big and ubiquitous as it did. I ought to be entertained, and I am. It’s a plan worthy of Doom himself, if you think about it.

ANOTHER EDEN, Free I’m definitely overthinking all of this, and I’ll probably forget about it by the time you read this. I don’t know, just idle thoughts, I suppose. The mind tends to wander when doing rote work like this. Another Eden has a new episode called The Closed-Off Open World and the Azure Rebel, and I really do like that title. A new class is unlocked for Helena, and a new character called Biaka can be encountered. Also a new dungeon. Kudos to the people handling the English version of this game for all their efforts in catching up to the Japanese version. Really quite outstanding how fast they’ve been going.

That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
