Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2019. It’s a pretty quiet day today so far, but business is going to pick up in a hurry because we’ve got a Nintendo Direct on the way later on. It’s hard to say exactly what news we can expect to see in there, especially since Nintendo has said it will focus on 2019 releases, but I’m sure it’ll be worth the watch. Besides that, we’ve got news of a couple of mobile favorites coming to the platform, a summary of today’s new release, and our usual list of sales to check out. Let’s wade in!
News
Don’t Forget to Check Out the Nintendo Direct Later Today
Rumors were swirling around wildly that Nintendo would set up a Nintendo Direct soon, and it seems like today is the day. Check out Nintendo Direct at Nintendo’s site later today at 3:00 pm PT/6:00 pm ET to see the 40-minute presentation, which will focus largely on 2019 titles like Pokemon Sword & Shield, Luigi’s Mansion 3, and more. My gut says that if we’re getting anything new for the Nintendo Switch Online service anytime soon, it’s going to be announced here. I’ll be watching at… 7:00 am local time and will have a summary of the presentation for you in tomorrow’s SwitchArcade Round-Up.
‘Inferno 2’ From Radiangames Comes to Switch September 19th
Friends, I love Radiangames. How much do I love Radiangames? I actually give their releases their own special folder on my iPhone. So I probably don’t need to tell you how excited I am that one of the developer’s finest twin-stick shoot-em-ups is coming to the Switch. Inferno 2 is coming to the platform via a collaboration with 2Awesome Studio, and it will sport a brand-new two-player local co-op mode. The game will be available on September 19th and will cost a mere $4.99. It’s the perfect treat for anyone who enjoys a nice white-knuckle twin-stick shooter.
Two Great inkle Games Are Heading to Switch
It’s just how it is: inkle makes some neat story-telling games. I always knew when it was time to review one of their releases, I’d be in for a great time. 80 Days, the developer’s spin on the Jules Verne classic Around the World in 80 Days, went over particularly well with people on just about every platform it released on. And on October 1st, it has a chance to win over a whole new crowd as the game arrives on Switch. But that’s not all, friends. The latest game from inkle, Heaven’s Vault, will be making its way to Switch in early 2020. That game hasn’t even come to mobile platforms yet, so it’ll be really great to finally get it on a handheld platform.
‘Puyo Puyo Champions’ is Getting Two New Modes
There are at present four different ways to get your Puyo Puyo on with your Nintendo Switch. Puyo Puyo Tetris was the first release in the series on the system, mashing up the two popular puzzle brands in a package that pleased many. We recently saw the Western release of the SEGA AGES Puyo Puyo, which brings the original arcade game home complete with online play. The modified Genesis version of that same original arcade game appears in SEGA Genesis Classics as Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine. But the best bang for your buck is the newest entry in the series, Puyo Puyo Champions. The only problem is that its content is heavily geared towards multiplayer competition. What’s a new player to do? Well, the next update for the game will add two new modes that should help. The Lessons Mode has hundreds of helpful guides to teach you the ins and outs of Puyo Puyo. The Challenge Mode puts you to the test in a variety of conditions. That update should be hitting rather soon if it’s not already out.
New Releases
The Long Journey Home ($29.99)
Mmm. I like what this game is shooting for, but it just doesn’t work out all that well. Your four-person crew is flung far into space, and you need to try to survive long enough to make it home. All kinds of things can and will go wrong more or less at random, and the aliens you meet along the way are just as likely to cheat you as they are to help. And if that’s what the game was about, it would probably have been fine. But it has little action segments that have to be repeated again and again, where the consequences for the smallest of screw-ups will send you to a pretty swift game over. In the end, the game’s good aspects slightly outweigh its bad points, but there are enough tedious and annoying bits that I have trouble recommending this with any zeal whatsoever.
Sales
In keeping with the theme of the day, there isn’t too much happening here at the time of this writing. We’ve got the perpetual weekend sales trio that seems to be on sale more often than not, and a handful of other more unusual discounts. Golf Peaks is probably the best of the bunch, but unless you’re really intrigued by it, I’d save my money and see what the rest of the week has to offer. The outbox has quite a bit more going on. The THQ Nordic sale is wrapping up, and so is that stunning deep sale on Superbeat: XONiC. Take an extra look through and make sure you’ve got what you want, as we may not see some of these games this low again for a while.
