N3twork, the company formed several years ago by the founders of the iconic mobile games company ngmoco, have just announced a multi-year partnership with The Tetris Company to “exclusively develop and publish new Tetris games built from the ground up for mobile devices worldwide." Worldwide, except for China, that is. The first of these games will be Tetris Royale, a 100-player battle royale version of the classic block-dropping game where players will battle for leaderboard supremacy across various seasons. In addition, “Players will have the ability to complete daily challenges while competing in the Tetris Royale mode to earn rewards including customization options as well as power-ups and boosters that can be used in battle."
It sure sounds an awful lot like Tetris 99 on the Nintendo Switch, which is an absolute blast, so I wouldn’t mind at all having something similar to play on my mobile devices. And in addition to the 100-player battle royale mode, Tetris Royale will also feature “massive" daily competitons that will feature thousands of players as well as good old-fashioned single-player Marathon mode for those that just want to clear as many lines as they can. Tetris Royale is currently in development for iOS and Android, and should be soft-launching at some point this year with a worldwide release date yet to be determined. I’ll be looking forward to Tetris Royale as well as other Tetris-related games from N3twork in the future.
