Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. It’s a nice blend of paid and free-to-play games this week, with plenty of new features, content drops, and added compatibility all around. I’ve picked out ten of my favorites from the bunch for you to take a look at as you start your week. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!
Morels, $4.99 The digital adaptation of the card game Morels received an update not long ago that adds the expansion, Foray, to the game. The expansion adds 13 new types of cards to the game, including new characters and items, new weather, and what the update notes call a more dynamic forest. Not sure what that translates out to, but hey, it’s in there. As is often the case with expansions, however, a couple of unexpected bugs cropped up. Worry not, as the developer pushed a couple more updates to fix them. Busy week!
ANOTHER EDEN, Free Another Eden keeps on piling up the content, and it’s still quite good. Honestly, I hope this game is able to tell its whole story in the end. It doesn’t push its monetization very hard so I’m a bit worried about whether or not it’s keeping its head above water. Oh well. Anyway, this update adds a new episode, The 1000 Year Ark of the Ocean Palace. It also adds the new characters Nagi and Chiyo as encounters, and throws in a new fishing function for good measure. And yes, some bug fixes too. I know everyone looks forward to those.
The Quest, $7.99 Trends come and go in the world of mobile gaming, but one fact always remains true: The Quest continues to get expansions. Of course, since the addition of the spiffy remastered version, many of those expansions are gussied-up version of the expansions that were released for the original app, but that’s fine. And that’s also what this update is about, as it adds support for Hero of Lukomorye IV. As usual, you buy the expansion separately, then activate it in the main app. If you haven’t already played it, it’s a pretty decent add-on for extremely high-level characters. Like, level 70 or higher. Plenty of fun for the price, and if you don’t have a character strong enough, you can just roll one.
Knights Chronicle, Free Netmarble’s well-polished social RPG Knights Chronicle got a nice new update in the last week, adding new Awakenings for Ruby and Esna, along with an all-new Drayan Hero. There’s also a new Nina Advent Dungeon in Apocalypse difficulty, and some good improvements to the Arena. Boss Dungeon rewards have been increased, Runes have been improved, and a number of UI tweaks and adjustments have been made to help the game flow a little more smoothly.
ROME: Total War - BI, $4.99 Like the original Rome: Total War, Rome: Total War Barbarian Invasion has been updated to work with iPhones. It’s a little tight, but the developers have done a good job of making it playable and legible. But that’s not all this update brings. Not by a long shot! There are also eight new playable factions, a range marker feature that shows firing distance, some serious UI improvements, a new help system for starting players, an in-game manual, new control options, and a whole lot more. Seriously impressive work all around. So impressive that the decision for this week’s coveted UMMSotW award winner is a rather easy one to make.
Kingdom Rush Vengeance TD Game, $4.99 That being said, I’m certainly not going to turn up my nose at new content for Kingdom Rush Vengeance. The latest update adds the Frozen Nightmare episode to the game, which sees you battling the Ice Queen in some chilly locales. Not much more to say than that, to be honest. If you’ve owned a Kingdom Rush game before, you’re probably quite familiar with how these expansions go. Another reason to load up a great game and enjoy some fresh challenges. And that’s what good updates are all about, right?
MARVEL Strike Force: Squad RPG, Free Rescue to the rescue! Ha. See, the thing I was doing there was taking a common expression and using a superhero name to make it sound weird. We have a lot of fun around here. But we also know how to stall when there isn’t a lot to talk about with an update. Anyway, Marvel Strike Force has added Rescue, also known as Pepper Potts in her own suit of armor, and a new chapter to the Falcon Event Campaign to introduce her properly.
Fortnite, Free Ooh, another new icon for Fortnite. That must mean there was a major update. And yeah, as all players of the game likely know by now, the Season 9 Battle Pass is now available, giving you access to new outfits, emotes, and wraps as Season 9 unfolds. In other changes, the island’s volcano has erupted, making some changes to familiar locations. Finally, the new Slipstreams will allow you travel around quickly from place to place. Which means, as usual, there’s plenty of new stuff to see and do in the world of Fortnite. This train isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
Merge Dragons!, Free This aptly-titled app about fusing things together, some of which are dragons, seems to be sustaining its popularity quite well over time. The newest event, Owlympus, introduces the Zeus and Hera dragons to the game. Should you finish all of the event quests, you’ll get the Nest of Hatched Owlet Griffons for your trouble. It’s pretty cute. This update also brings back the well-liked Baby Dragon Pack for a limited time. It costs $9.99 and it includes more or less what it says on the tin. Carry on with the merging of dragons, friends.
Fire Emblem Heroes, Free Version 3.5 of Fire Emblem Heroes has hit, and it brings a few nice new features to the game, as these monthly updates tend to. Friend Mock Battles have been added to Aether Raids, allowing you to practice battling on your friends’ defense maps. Yay for more uses for the friend system! The game will also notify you when you daily R&R Affinity is ready by popping an icon on the menu. Rounding things out is a new icon-only display mode for Sacred Seals that you can find in the Equip Seals menu. Nothing too big, but probably enough at this stage of the game’s life. And with a new mainline Fire Emblem just over the horizon, there are probably plenty of other things on the way.
