SwitchArcade Round-Up: Upcoming ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Event, Physical Version of ‘Celeste’ Now Available to Order, ‘Xenon Valkyrie+’ Out Now, New Sales, and More

Hello, gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 2nd, 2018. It’s a bit of a light one today as most folks are either just coming back from or are still on their holiday vacations. Still, we’ve got a couple of news items, a new release to look at, and a few new sales of note. It’s also worth mentioning that the majority of the Christmas sales are ending tomorrow, so it’s probably time to grab those games you were thinking about grabbing while the grabbing is still good. Let’s ring it in!

News

“Now You’re Playing With Spirit Power" Event Starting Soon in ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’

The next Spirit Event is starting on January 4th in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Running for three days, it’s titled “Now You’re Playing With Spirit Power", celebrating all things NES, Famicom, and Famicom Disk System. There aren’t any exclusive spirits this time around, but associated spirits will have a greatly increased chance of showing up during this event.

‘Celeste’ is Now Available to Pre-Order in Physical Form at Limited Run Games

Celeste was one of the most praised indie releases of 2018, and its Switch version is excellent. You can buy it right now on the eShop, of course, but if you want a physical copy and have $34.99 in your pocket, you can make those dreams come true. Limited Run Games now has the game available for pre-order on its website, and this is one of those open pre-orders where anyone who orders before the cut-off date of February 1st will get one. The games should ship out in March. There was also a Collector’s Edition available, but it sold out in a few minutes, so… yeah. At least you can get the normal edition!

New Game Announcements: ‘Bokosuka Wars 2’, ‘Legrand Legacy’, ‘Clannad’, ‘Samara Deluxe’

Some games making their Switch debuts were announced over the holidays, including Bokosuka Wars 2 (coming this year), Legrand Legacy (coming January 24th), Clannad (coming Spring in Japan, English version TBA but likely), and Samsara Deluxe (coming January 10th in NA). I don’t have enough details to go too deeply on any of these at the moment, but if you recognize the titles, you’ll probably have some idea of whether or not you’re into them.

New Releases

Xenon Valkryie+ ($9.99)

The sole release on New Year’s Day was this 2D action game. It’s one of those platformers with roguelite elements that are all the rage these days, and it features some pretty sweet-looking pixel art, so that’s nice. There are three different heroes, tons of items, bosses, multiple endings, and an apparently high level of difficulty. Sounds nice, but the proof of these things is in the playing, and I haven’t been able to put my hands on this one yet to confirm it’s the good stuff. Reviews on other platforms have been kind of so-so, and I’m not sure this particular version has anything that would change those assessments, but hey, you never know.

Sales

There are a few new sales from the last few days, with the highlights being Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition and Severed from DrinkBox Studios, and the very cool Battlezone Gold Edition. Please note that while I usually list the games whose sales are ending tomorrow, there are actually 194 titles going off sale tomorrow and I’m not going to deal with that. Assume that if there was a good sale you were eyeing before Christmas that it’s on its way back to a regular price tomorrow.

That’s it for today, but news should be picking up again soon. I mean, we’ve got a Mario game coming out next week! It’s one that was already out on another platform, but who cares? Mario! But even before we get to next week, we’ve got this week’s releases, and phew, there are plenty. There are more than ten coming tomorrow alone! Good thing you still have lots of money left, right? Right? Thanks for reading!
