FJ Games aka developer Frank and Jordan have created a number of mobile games you’ve probably heard of or played, one of them being the retro-style boxing game Pixel Punchers (Free) which was published in conjunction with Appsolute Games in August of last year. While Pixel Punchers ended up being a behind-the-back style boxing game similar to something like Punch Out!, it actually began life as a top-down prototype called Punch King which FJ were showing off way back in November of 2016. Well in an interesting twist, FJ had resurrected that original top-down idea and shared a bit of it on Twitter, which caught the attention of noted boxing game fan and prolific mobile developer and collaborator Colin Lane. After some back and forth the two decided to work together to finish up the game which is now called Undisputed Champ and is all set to launch this Thursday.
Undisputed Champ aims to keep things pretty simplistic, with just two buttons for punching, a button for blocking, and a virtual joystick for movement. You’ll choose a boxer and start out from the very beginning taking on your first fight and then work your way up the ladder to hopefully become crowned the… wait for it… undisputed champ! Each fight will net you some experience points which you can then pour into upgrading your boxer’s stats. In addition to the single player campaign, Undisputed Champ will also feature a novel same-device multiplayer mode where you and a buddy can each take an end of an iOS device and battle it out. I think it’s interesting that Colin Lane’s boxing game Big Shot Boxing (Free) is a side-view game, FJ’s previous Pixel Punchers is a third person game, and now their collaborative game Undisputed Champ is a top-down game. With three boxing games between them, none of them are exactly alike! That’s pretty cool in my book. If you’re the pre-ordering type you can do so in the App Store here, otherwise look for Undisputed Champ to launch this Wednesday for free with a one-time $1.99 IAP to remove ads.
