Besides match-3 games, if there was a genre on the App Store that elicits more groans from it just being done to death I’d say the endless runner would be next in line. Temple Run pretty much blew the genre wide open several years ago and there have been countless similar titles released ever since. Some of them are even very good or unique, but overall it felt like we were just doing the same old thing over and over again as we came down with a heavy case of the blahs towards any and all endless runners. Every once in a while though a new endless runner comes along and does something that makes me actually think “Cool!" In this particular case it’s a new game from developer Cloudland Studios called Wheely World. “Sorry folks, the park’s closed. The moose out front should’ve told you." Oh wait, that’s Walley World. THIS is Wheely World and this is what it looks like.
As you can see, Wheely World is an endless driving game but played from a top-down perspective, and the track you’re driving through is actually like one big, endless, randomly generated log of craziness. This is cool for a couple of reasons. One is that you have much more horizontal space in which to drive, compared to many runners that force you down a narrow path. But also, since that horizon is just constantly churning over, you really have to think on your feet and be prepared to instantly react to whatever is coming your way. It kind of reminds me of a faster, top-down Faily Brakes. There are also numerous themes, vehicles, and power-ups to spice up the experience. Overall it just plain looks cool to me, so if you agree then you can check out Wheely World on iOS this Thursday, and if you’re on Android it looks to have launched a little bit early and is available on the Google Play Store right now.
