Nintendo’s latest mobile game release, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp (Free), has had a pretty strong first week on the App Store. That’s hardly surprising, though, as pretty much anything Nintendo releases is guaranteed to get a lot of attention up-front. Only time will tell if Pocket Camp is going to behave more like Fire Emblem Heroes or more like Miitomo. A lot of that will depend on Nintendo keeping the attention of players, something the game seems to be struggling with already. Luckily, the game’s first big event has just arrived.
The Holiday Event sees you collecting candy canes by fulfilling requests for the animals. You have a chance to get one or two pieces with every request you complete. You can then use those pieces to craft special holiday items and furniture like a Christmas tree or a big cake. There are also limited-time goals associated with those items that will reward you with more candy canes, some leaf tickets, or special holiday clothing for your character. Everyone gets a Santa hat automatically, but you’ll have to hustle if you want to complete your outfit. You can also earn candy canes from the Shovelstrike Quarry if you hit it up at the right time of the day.
It’s a fun enough thing given how soon it’s coming after the game’s release, but I’m not sure this does enough to address the game’s limited loop. You’re still doing the same things you were before, you’re just getting some extra goodies for doing it. The novelty of the goodies is probably enough at this early stage of the game, but we’ll have to see what else Nintendo has up its sleeves as far as updates to this game go. For now, get out there and start scooping up as much candy as possible, as per holiday tradition.
