We’re only a handful of days away from the release of the latest game in Nintendo’s long-running Fire Emblem series in North America, Europe, and Australia. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is a full Nintendo 3DS remake of the second game in the series, Fire Emblem Gaiden, which released in Japan in 1992 for Nintendo’s 8-bit hardware. Fire Emblem Echoes launched last month in Japan, and to commemorate it, mobile spin-off Fire Emblem Heroes (Free) held an event featuring one of the game’s two main characters, Alm, and some of his associates. At the time, there was speculation that Nintendo was holding back some of the cast for a second event nearer to the international launch, speculation which has now proven to be correct.
Rite of Shadows sees four new heroes added to the game, along with a brand new story chapter based around the upcoming game. The new additions include the other main character of Shadows of Valentia Princess Celica, her energetic magic-wielding friend Mae, the cool and collected Boey, and the shy cleric Genny. The new story chapter includes five new maps that push the not-at-all-predictable story forward an inch or two. But hey, even if the story lets you down, at least you can enjoy the gorgeous music, which is drawn straight from the soundtrack of Shadows of Valentia. There are also a bunch of new quests to complete which will be running alongside the new Summoning Focus event.
Whether Fire Emblem Heroes is your main jam or just something you’re playing while you wait for the release of Fire Emblem Echoes later this week, it’s nice to have some new content. It will be interesting to see how Nintendo keeps the Heroes train rolling when there isn’t a new game on the immediate horizon. I guess we’ll know soon enough.
