Ryan Cash, of Alto’s Adventure fame, has a talent for creating (or helping other’s create) moody games, and the upcoming DISTANT, developed in collaboration with Australian indie duo Slingshot & Satchel, is definitely not an exception. The game is primarily Slingshot & Satchel’s work. DISTANT will take players on a wondrous journey through pastel dreamscapes, as per the announcement, and as you can see from the trailer below, there’s definitely a dream-like quality in the environments and the general mood. Although this will be a platformer, don’t expect frantic, continuous movement; DISTANT is about contemplation.
However, contemplation aside, the trailer does show some tricky platforming moves. As you can see towards the end of the trailer, the caped little figure jumps off the edge of the cliff only to be shot across the gap like from a slingshot. I’m guessing the little flame-like creature next to that figure is responsible for this very smooth launch. Add to that the way the little triangle creates a sonic boom of sorts and then makes all those plants appear, and I’m intrigued. It looks like a world I’ll want to explore, and the developers have stated that this is a lore-filled universe, so hopefully that means they’ll be a lot to discover. The game will be coming out for Apple TV only at this point, and we have no release dates.
