Amidst all the excitement for the beautiful upcoming epic Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm, it’s easy to forget that the original game is still rather brilliant in itself, and despite the fact it released way back in 2013, it still holds up very well to this day. Oceanhorn ($7.99) is a fantastic substitute for the Zelda experience on the App Store, and through embracing this influence fully manages to retain what makes the Nintendo adventure classics so fun to play, while also crafting its own identity and world. Despite this, one of the key selling points for the original Oceanhorn was how it took the graphical capabilities of the iPhone to the limit, and the update released today continues with this theme with a variety of additions that bring the game firmly into 2016.
In Oceanhorn’s 3.0 update, the developers have added support for the increased power of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus with a variety of added features, as well as an updated camera for the latter device for an even better perspective of the game world. Furthermore, a ‘Power Boost’ option has been added to Oceanhorn, which allows for a smoother frame rate at the expense of a faster battery drain and your device getting warmer than it would outside of this setting. And, as ever, some additional bug fixes are included to streamline the experience further. While these relatively minor inclusions in the self-proclaimed ‘major update’ likely won’t win over anyone who wasn’t impressed by the game, it’s great to see Oceanhorn take advantage of the newer devices. It also is worth checking out for anyone who wants to show off their new device, or fans who may want to replay it over three years after its initial release. At the very least, it’s a nice reminder that Oceanhorn 2 is on the horizon, and hopefully will only improve on the graphical prowess of its predecessor.
