Tokaido is a board game with a very lovely art style and general design. I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but I like the way the game’s designers represented the locations and the general feel of the place. So when I originally heard it was coming to mobile, I was excited about seeing that art style transferred over to the digital sphere. As the good people of BoardGameGeek noticed today, Funforge, the game’s publisher, is getting ready to start an open beta test for the game, and you can go here to join if you want to. If you like board games, this is probably a no-brainer.
What do you do in Tokaido? You and other players travel along the East Sea Road connecting Kyoto to Edo, stopping at the various stations along the road from which you can buy all kinds of souvenirs, meet new and interesting people, taste the cuisine, and much more. The order of play is from the farthest to the closest, which makes moving along the road strategical; you don’t want to rush ahead too much because you’ll always play last. I’ve seen this game played and it’s quite fun. Now let’s see how the digital version will look and play.
