Pinball-style battling mechanics have proven a great fit for mobile games. Monster Strike (Free) is the most famous example of this, and we very recently got the enjoyable Treasure Buster ($0.99) which utilizes similar mechanics. Then there’s the cult favorite BlitzKeep (Free) as well as the phenomenal Squids ($3.99) and Squids Wild West ($3.99). And I’m sure there are dozens more I’m not even thinking of. The point being that the “pull back to slingshot your character into enemies and wreak havoc" mechanic is super satisfying and works extremely well on the touchscreen. The newest project from Upopa Games takes this mechanic and runs with it, offering what appear to be more expansive levels and meatier RPG mechanics built around the pinball battling. Check out the trailer for Barbaric: The Golden Hero.
Upopa has a pretty great track record after bringing us the stylish Hopeless series of games as well as the deceptively challenging tile-sliding puzzler Sugar Slide: The Path Home (Free). I’m really interested in a more fleshed-out game that features the pinball-style battling mechanics, which is exactly what Barbaric looks like. The official worldwide release of Barbaric on iOS is next Thursday, October 27th but if you’re an Android owner you can actually grab it on Google Play where it’s already been out for a while now. As an iOS gamer myself, I’ll look forward to getting my hands on this one next week.
