SMG Brings ‘Thumb Drift GT-V’ to Apple TV

TouchArcade Rating:

SMG Studio has released Thumb Drift (Free) for Apple TV as Thumb Drift GT-V. If you’re a fan of Thumb Drift, but have wanted to play on your TV while at home, this is the version for you. By default, you control with the Siri Remote turned horizontal, but can also play with swipe controls on the remote’s touchpad. If you have a controller, I highly recommend that, as it feels great playing with an analog joystick.

The other big change to Thumb Drift GT-V is that it is a paid game now. This comes with a few bonuses beyond just not having ads. You start off with 2000 coins, and can buy whichever cars you want instead of having to get random cars with your coins. Cars are also cheaper, though the coin cost for each additional car increases. So, if you have an Apple TV and like Thumb Drift, this might be worth checking out.

Supercell does a decent job with Free To Play imo. But I really hate myself after spending $40-80 on one of their games and then deleting it because I'm just bored of it. Obviously the difference is I paid $4.99 for Badlands and maybe the same for the second as well as bought all IAP's. Both are lovely games. And both still have replayability for me. I sure this has a bit to do with the quality of the games as well the fact that I don't have to keep paying to enjoy them.

I'm sure this will move Frogmind into the safe zone and maybe more people will get to try their games. I do wish them the best of luck. They have done a lovely job in the premium game area for my tastes thus far. Again I wish them the best with the new company.

Means Badland's gonna be PTW also now? Oh man...

    3. curtisrshideler

      Another one bites the dust.

Mark my words! F2P model is going to destroy the whole mobile gaming market.

Mark my words - it won't.

        1. Petr Dvořák

Another pay 2 win loser ;-)

          1. dancj

Never paid anything in an F2P game - but even if I did it wouldn't make me a loser.

    5. vic_viper_001

Remember... only suckers waste money on so called "premium" games. It all winds up FTP in the end, anyway.

BTW. I find it cute how when YOU cancel your payment method with Apple, they send an email telling you that THEY canceled it. It's like a desperate employee saying, "You can't fire me... I QUIT!"

      1. dancj

Most of it does - but not all. And some people don't mind paying to get a game sometimes years earlier than they'd get it for free.

    6. Greenwithskillz

      😥😥😥😥😥

    7. rezn

If anyone was curious not sure why this wasn't included but Supercell aquired Frogmind for 7.8 million dollars.

    8. FrehleyzComet

So basically, the next Badlands game is gonna be a pile of burning dog s$&@?!

      1. rezn

They have like 3 free to plays in the works I believe is what I read. This is why I'm happiest buying games from tinyBuild, Digital Devolver, Raw Fury Games etc. Steam is where I live lately. But I still love those iOS indie gems that TA brings us news on too.

    9. ImJPaul

Good for them. Showing that indie mobile gaming can be extremely profitable. Time to by that Lambo boys!

    10. Quazonk

      R.I.P.

    11. HelperMonkey

Talented developers, already recognizing that F2P is more viable and developing their future games with that in mind, make a big business deal which will allow them to continue to make their living creating games...
And the hate comes rolling in.

Seriously, congrats to them on their success.
They've shown thus far that they have a solid focus on quality. Until they display something different, I will anticipate good things.

    12. ROGER-NL

Gamecenter is gone, so the rest will be gone soon too, sorry for my sarcasm, still angry about the vanishing of Gamecenter, but I will get over it I hope.

    13. Ijipop

I know my comment won't change anything.
I must be looking for attention or must be bored as f.......

      I'm an old school gamer.
For almost 30 years I've bought my games, lol, "premium".

100$ for Street fighter 2, 100$ for FF3, 100$ for Earthbound. 70$ for Earthworm Jim, 100$ for Killer Instinct. The list goes on and on.

(I apologize I'm from Québec, Canada. So my english is far from perfect.). And my text may not be well construct?!?!? But you'll get the point!

      Anyhow.
I can still play these classics.
I paid for a product, and I can still play them.
That's what bothers me with F2P.
You pay for a services, and not a product.

We are still at the beginning of that new "era of gaming".

Smart phones started to have very basic games, tetris, snake and such.

You must never forget that what leads the world since the beginning of time is greed and money.

So theres games and consoles because there is money to be made, otherwise we would not have any games to play. F'n period.

I could go on and on but let's get to Supercell and Badland creators.

Yes I'm happy for them, they created cool looking games with a lot of replay values.
I'm actually a big fan of their titles.

I've played CoC for 3 years before deleting it and Clash Royal for almost a year and stayed jn the last arena for months.

      I think I learned a lesson there.

      It's just not for me.

      Are the games fun, yes
Graphics, sound, interface, addictiveness, yes yes and f*n yes.

But hey! Every good thing must have an end.
      FF7 110 hrs, enough
      Disgaea 1-2-3, over 400hrs, enough
      And blah blah blah.

      What I mean is.
      I will pay, for gaming.
Art always comes with a price.
I pay for art, music, movies, games, paintings.

Having one price, and the freedom to chose to keep it, sell it. store it. I like that, sorry.
Video game is art, and art is unfortunatly meant to be possessed. Sad but true. (Metallica, lol)

As for games F2P I think it's capitalist 101 when you're being tempted to put 10-15-100$ to buy gems, diamonds and other s**t to get stronger etc etc etc, it's something I don't beleive in in the end.

Games should have an end, just like songs, movies and paintings.
In my opinion it's more beautiful that way. You get a feeling of accomplishement, sort of.

F2P is like going to the casino, you just want to put more because you think you'll win in the end but, sadly no.

      These games are great.
But there made to make cash.
They are the Justin Beiber, Backstreet Boys of the industry.

      Quality, no souls.

      Anyhoo.
Good for them, will wait to see what they do next. Still got plenty of hearthful, soulful games to play.

      Sorry for my english
      Just my 2 cents.

      Jeff

Beautifully said. And yes some devs do great with Free to Play. Some even try different things that make the game seem more premium at the beginning. But yes free to play is disposable. And almost always linear in a way that keeps you in the confines of the model posed to get more money. It doesn't hurt cheap gamers that refuse to pay for free to play gems or cheaper players that refuse to pay for premium games. It hurts the hardcore gamers that want more gems more content and a hope that the game will get better (it usually doesn't with a few exceptions) Also thanks to those cheap gamers for helping make all this possible. Or the people that avoid supporting devs at the beginning when they need it most to succeed. So they can be cheap like most of my family. Even my mom is unwilling to pay $1 for a game but downloads the free version and complains about ads. Wait for the game to be free and yay for you now you got a deal. But the devs get only the hope that you will maybe tell someone in your social channels about the game when it goes premium again (if ever). I wish Frogmind good luck. I will try their new games. But it's likely I will delete them soon after to make room for devs with hearts bigger than their wallets. For all the money free to play makes the devs I fell like they should be played in casinos right next to slots with player tracking, free drinks and comped rooms in the hotel. At least then when you dump another $20 in, you might actually win a piece of the pie and have sometime to show for your unhealthy addiction. Sorry for the messy rant. But I had too.

    14. matteopico

      I'm worried.

    15. Press2Play

So who's next? I hope butterscotch won't fall for this BS.

    16. Mist17

      Bugger, bye frogmind

1 out of 10 TA articles are Horribly SADDENing to me. Fuc$ F2P. Why are we allowing this. F2p takes advantage of people base instincts.
