Thanks to the Final Fantasy series, Square is a household name among gamers of all ages. There was a time, however, that they were relatively unknown, struggling to find anything that would stick in a highly competitive video game market. It was in that time that they released an NES game called King’s Knight. Originally released in Japan in 1986 with a later release in North America in 1989, King’s Knight was an odd vertical shoot-em-up with a thick coat of medieval fantasy painted over it. Mild RPG mechanics and a weird multi-plane playing field helped it stand out from the pack, but on the whole, it wasn’t a very good game and was soon forgotten.
Until today, apparently. Announced as yet another spin-off of the Final Fantasy 15 universe, King’s Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon brings the cast of the original game back for another adventure, this time in a fully polygonal world. Yes, Ray Jack the Knight, Kid Thief Toby, and even the monster Barusa have returned. The stupid wizard guy, too. With them comes a huge cast of new characters that looks positively ripe for some social RPG-style gatcha shenanigans. While the trailer doesn’t have a ton of information to go on, the game looks to have a multiplayer mode and is almost certainly going to be free-to-play. The gameplay looks like a nice update of the original, with big boss battles taking center stage.
As with Justice Monsters Five, the connections to Final Fantasy 15 are hard to spot, but the trailer does feature cameo appearances of the main cast of the upcoming game. Stick around until the end, it’s magnificently awkward. As for King’s Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon, it looks like Square Enix will have this out on iOS and Android sometime this year. We’ll bring you more information on the game as we get it, along with whatever other mobile spin-offs Square comes up with between now and the actual game they’re spinning off of’s release.
