The Sorcery! series is easily one of the best gamebook series on the App Store, with the first one being a “vibrant piece of interactive fiction" (per our review) and the other two demonstrating continuous improvements. No wonder, then, that many are anxiously waiting for Sorcery! 4: The Crown of Kings, the fourth and final installment of the series, especially after Inkle knocked it out of the park with its fantastic 80 Days. While we still don’t have a release date for you – Inkle is still not ready to commit to a date – we do have more information from a blog post today that describes the current state of the game along with some information regarding what the fourth installment brings to the table.
According to the blog post, the developers have already done their first pass of the story (which currently stands at half a million words), fleshing out rooms, characters, etc, as well as a second pass, which checks for consistency and pacing. Now, they are shifting to beta-testing the game to check that everything is ticking properly and tinker with whatever needs tinkering. The story comes with multiple endings but also with multiple states for multiple endings; there’s even an ultimate ending that’s even better than the other ones.
Sorcery! 4 will act as both a complete experience for players new to the series as well as an epic conclusion for those who’ve played the previous ones; just to see how much continuity there exists in the series, a Sorcery! 3 game loaded into Part 4 brings with it close to a thousand individual story-flags that make the two parts feel like one, seamless story. All this sounds great, and I’m sure that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on Sorcery! 4. Hopefully, that will be sooner rather than later.
