Apple’s WWDC keynote was very light on anything related to games – the most notable games-specific feature was the passing mention of “ReplayKit Live" – but the final feature, Swift Playgrounds, is a pretty cool thing Apple has set to release this fall, with a public beta available in July. It’s an app that’s meant to help teach kids to code through demos and games that will teach them the various facets of Swift, and provide an important introduction to coding for future generations.
While plenty of attempts to make coding interesting and palatable for the inexperienced have been made – from physical toys to even games like the recent Human Resource Machine ($4.99) which we recently reviewed – Apple doing this has some major clout behind it. And since it will be free, it could be a powerful introduction to coding for a whole lot of people, or at least a creative way to pass the time and get some extra knowledge.
