My disappointment with the current state of the FIFA franchise on mobile has been well documented (including in my not-so-glowing review of FIFA 16), and while we’ve had some fun arcade soccer games lately – such as Stickman Soccer 16 (Free), I’m still hoping for a wider range of options when it comes to enjoying one of my favorite sports. So, I was glad to see that we have another challenger entering the pitch soon, Pixel Cup Soccer 16, a retro style soccer game that looks like loads of fun (we actually wrote about this game during our GDC 2016 coverage). The game’s visuals and music definitely take me back to all those retro soccer games I played when I was growing up, and the gameplay looks like it’s going to hit a nice balance between arcade and simulation (with the balance obviously tilting towards arcade).
The game, which is a sequel of sorts to Pixel Cup Soccer, boasts simplified controls with one directional control and two buttons, but it does allow you to curve the ball after you shoot, a sign that it’s more than just a simple arcade. The game will include different weather conditions, women’s league, a variety of competitions, and a party mode to play with your friends. The game is coming out for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV on June 2nd, and it will cost $2.99. The developers are pretty active in our forums and are taking suggestions, so go and give them your 2 cents.
