Two things that I absolutely adore in this world: Cats and ’90s fighting games. The problem is that I’ve only ever been able to enjoy these two wonderful things separately… until now. Or in the next couple of weeks, at least. That’s because Cat Puncher is getting ready to bust onto the scene, and the easiest way to describe it is Street Fighter II with cats. If that’s not a tagline that will sell a million copies of a game, then I don’t know what is. Cat Puncher isn’t shy about its inspirations, including aping the entire Street Fighter II intro scene (but with cats) as well as featuring a bonus stage where you beat up a car–I mean couch, on a pier.
Cat Puncher will feature a full arcade mode along with 7 unique stages, but as you can see in that trailer, there’s also a fun-looking same-device multiplayer mode. Obviously controls have been heavily streamlined in Cat Puncher compared to a typical fighting game, but the true magic in these games is battling it out face-to-face with your opponent and all the trash-talking that goes with it, so the local multiplayer should be a great feature. According to developer Tom Young, Cat Puncher should be out on iOS “within the next couple of weeks" and you can count on me shouting it from the rooftops once it’s finally available.
